Green Bay - Things are starting to fall for the Green Bay
Packers' offensive line exactly the way they did a year ago.
And that's not a bad thing.
For the second straight year, the only job up for grabs is left
guard and for the second straight year the team's No. 1 draft
pick is competing for a starting job at a position he didn't
play in college.
Last year, it was Iowa left tackle Bryan Bulaga trying to make
the transition inside and this year it's Mississippi State left
tackle Derek Sherrod. Last year, it was after the first
exhibition game that Daryn Colledge started getting the majority
of snaps over Bulaga and on Monday veteran T.J. Lang got them
over Sherrod.
McCarthy wasn't saying whether one guy was ahead of the other,
but Lang had a better first game.
"T.J. probably graded out a little better than Derek," McCarthy
said of the Packers' 27-17 loss to Cleveland in the preseason
opener Saturday night. "We're not making a decision today. It's
important to get those guys as many reps as possible."
Like Bulaga, Sherrod is clearly a better tackle than a guard and
may wind up backing up Clifton. But he's athletic and gifted
enough that the coaches have to see if they can fit him into the
lineup.
Lang, however, looks more natural playing inside. He said he's
hoping he'll be able to increase his snaps at guard, but he blew
off the advantage over Sherrod Monday and said he was taking
nothing for granted
"Overall, I did a pretty decent job," Lang said of Saturday.
"Watching the film, a lot of good things showed up. Just a
couple of small things I've got to keep improving on. Not too
many detrimental plays. I'm going to build on that. I think it
was a good starting point."
The main thing going for McCarthy is that he can allow the
competition to go as long as he wants because he's got four
starters returning to their positions this year, three of whom -
Clifton, center Scott Wells and right guard Josh Sitton - were
starters in the same place the year before that.
The advantage of experience is that McCarthy could go to a
no-huddle offense with his No. 1 unit in the first game
and barely blink.
"We felt we were successful moving the ball in the no-huddle,"
Wells said. "We controlled the tempo, which is a big key in that
situation. We were able to go out there and keep them on their
heels a little bit and use the snap count to our advantage. That
could be a good weapon for us."
In general, the Packers are probably in better shape on the line
than their NFC North brethren because of the continuity. In
Detroit there are injury concerns at both tackle positions; in
Minnesota, there's a new left tackle and possibly a new right
guard; and in Chicago center and right tackle will feature new
starters...

Either way you look at it, the Green Bay Packers are three weeks
away from selecting a 53-man roster without the services of 13
veteran players that were good enough to play on their National
Football League championship team.
On Super Bowl Sunday, tight end Donald Lee, guards Daryn
Colledge and Jason Spitz, running back Brandon Jackson, fullback
Korey Hall and defensive end Cullen Jenkins all were in uniform.
During the regular season, tackle Mark Tauscher, defensive end
Justin Harrell, linebackers Nick Barnett, Brandon Chillar and
Brady Poppinga, and safeties Derrick Martin and Anthony Smith
all played before ending up on injured reserve.
How many veterans did general manager Ted Thompson add to
replace them?
Not a single one.
Instead, Thompson drafted 10 players, signed 17 rookie free
agents and picked up eight "street" free agents.
Three weeks into the unrestricted free-agent signing period, 156
players have switched teams. Green Bay and the New York Jets are
the only clubs that haven't signed anyone.
On the front end of their roster, the Packers are loaded. They
can match star for star with anyone.
As for the back end, time will tell how deep they are.
"We think we've got a good roster," said Reggie McKenzie, the
Packers' director of football operations. "It remains to be seen
if it's really good because we've still got some young guys that
need to step up."
The Packers seem deeper on offense than defense.
"If some guys step up, yes," McKenzie said. "We've just got to
get that O-line squared away. The coaches are doing a lot of
things there, trying to figure that out.
"We've got a lot of tight ends. We added another receiver. The
running back is healthy, plus we added one more.
"We lost a couple guys on defense. At linebacker, we had at the
beginning Nick Barnett and Chillar."
The Packers are well aware that their roster is being
scrutinized daily by competitors seeking upgrades. With a
potential surplus of talent at wide receiver, tight end, running
back and defensive back, they will look to make the type of
cut-down day trade for a future draft pick that eluded them a
year ago...

Green Bay - If you play wide receiver, tight end or running back
for the Green Bay Packers, every roster berth will be a blessing
and every regular-season snap will need to be earned.
The Packers might have more legitimate skill-position options
than any team in the National Football League. They're brimming
with wide receivers, tight ends and running backs.
Maybe in previous years, a luminary such as Donald Driver or a
two-time 1,200-yard rusher such as Ryan Grant could ease into
training camp.
Nobody has the luxury of easing into anything at their positions
this summer.
Nine, maybe even 10 of the 12 wide receivers in camp might have
the ability to play in the league. At running back, all five
probably do...

Green Bay - The Green Bay Packers finally broke their
three-week, three-way rotation at right outside linebacker
Wednesday, and Erik Walden was the player moving to the
forefront.
"It ain't done until the fat lady sings," Walden said after
spending his second straight day with the No. 1 defense ahead of
Frank Zombo and Brad Jones. "It's final when New Orleans
arrives."
Still, Walden admitted he was "absolutely" pumped and said he
would do whatever was necessary to hold the spot.
"Anytime you're with the 1's it's definitely a little boost,"
Walden said. "I'm working every day trying to convince him (
Kevin Greene) along with the other coaches and the organization
that I'm their guy. But, at the same time, you can't be worrying
about that too much or it might affect your play.
"I give them a player that can do a numerous amount of things.
Just that energy, and playing with heart. I'm going to show up
every Sunday and try to help the team win."

Green Bay - The Green Bay Packers aren't giving up on the
possibility that first-round pick Derek Sherrod can play left
guard, but if they had to play a regular-season game this week,
T.J. Lang would be their starter.
Lang has taken a solid lead over Sherrod in a competition that
features the two rotating in practice from left guard to left
tackle on almost a down-by-down basis. After praising Lang for
his performance in the preseason opener earlier in the week,
coach Mike McCarthy stretched his praise even more after
practice Wednesday.
"I really like how T.J.'s come to camp," McCarthy said. "We have
a history with T.J. He's made a jump from last year. That's
clearly evident...
