Lost to the Browns 24-17 was it? Not a big deal it is
pre-season. However the first team O and D looked rusty.
Really nothing to be concerned about at this point. And the
Packers O did score the second possession and looked sharper.

Typical sloppy first game. Rodgers and Flynn looked good. Cobb
had 4 catches for 60 yards. Looked like football player. Can't
recall a rookie WR ever doing that in his first game of the GB
WCO.

Bob McGinn of the Journal Sentinel
Cleveland - It was typical ho-hum exhibition fare, the Green Bay
Packers' 27-17 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Saturday night.
But there was nothing the least bit flat about the performance
of Randall Cobb, the Packers' exciting second-round draft
choice.
Based on his three first-half returns against the Browns' almost
always top-notch special teams, Cobb looks as if he has a chance
to make the weakest part of the defending Super Bowl champions'
game considerably better.
On offense, Cobb received a few snaps with the No. 1 offense in
its two series of work. But when Matt Flynn entered the lineup
late in the first quarter, coach Mike McCarthy made Cobb a
prominent part of the attack.
Cobb slipped inside out of the right slot and made a diving
catch for 13 yards despite tight coverage by cornerback DeAngelo
Smith. It came on third and 5, exactly the type of situation in
which general manager Ted Thompson envisioned Cobb doing damage.
Late in the first half, Cobb lined up in the left slot when he
worked free inside of cornerback Buster Skrine, the Browns'
speedy rookie, and turned it into a gain of 19.
One play later, safety Ray Ventrone found himself in a terrible
matchup against Cobb from the left slot. With Ventrone
ill-equipped to cover more closely, Cobb zipped inside and
turned an 8-yard route into a gain of 28.
"He's going to be a good player like he was in college," a
National Football League personnel man said at halftime. "Looked
good in the slot. Explosive."
Cobb's obvious ability to play gives the Packers five capable
wide receivers: Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, Jordy Nelson,
James Jones and the rookie from Kentucky. Several others down
the depth chart might be able to play, too.
"They have receivers so they can bring him along slowly," the
scout said. "He doesn't have to play right away."
On his two kickoff returns, Cobb was impressive just by how his
body was moving forward with momentum before he fielded the
ball.
The opening kickoff by Phil Dawson hung in the air 4.09 seconds
and came down 4 yards deep in the end zone. Nonplused, Cobb
surged ahead, broke through some trash and gained 32 yards to
the 28.
When Dawson hit his next kickoff to the 1 with 4.19 hang time,
Cobb ran even harder and ricocheted for a 26-yard return.
Before rookie Shaky Smithson took over the return duties, Cobb
had one crack on a punt. He took a chance, fielding Richmond
McGee's 46-yard punt that hung 4.68 seconds. Cobb failed to
gain, but he was under control and secured the ball well.
"He should be good at both," the scout said. "It should help
them."
Green Bay ranked 22nd in punt-return average and 26th in
kickoff-return average last season. Shawn Slocum, the special
teams coach, identified the return game as his main focus for
improvement...

Cleveland - They might be competing for the starting job at left
guard, but as long as they play for Green Bay Packers coach Mike
McCarthy and line coach James Campen, rookie Derek Sherrod and
veteran T.J. Lang are going to play left tackle, too.
Locked in a battle for the right to replace former starter Daryn
Colledge, Sherrod and Lang flip-flopped at guard and tackle in
every series they were in together during the Packers' 27-17
loss to the Cleveland Browns Saturday night.
Sherrod got the start at left guard and then gave way to Lang
when the starters were in. Then the two played next to one
another for about two quarters, switching off each series.
Neither is getting a shot to be a backup at right tackle; that
duty went exclusively to Marshall Newhouse...

The Packers came into camp excited about first-round draft pick
Derek Sherrod possibly starting this year, but after watching
their preseason opener Saturday night at Cleveland, I’m not so
sure they should be, not as a starter right away.
Sherrod is a natural left tackle playing left guard, and he has
a lot of work to do to be a starter in the NFL. I don’t think he
finishes well. He sometimes stays on blocks for a little bit,
but he doesn’t block until the whistle. He has the ability to
get out to linebackers in the run game, and he has the size and
reach and body type to do it, but he just didn’t finish blocks
against the Browns. He also needs to play with lower pad level
and use his hands better, be under control with his hands.
Even in pass blocking he didn’t finish and allowed some
pressure. This is the easiest thing for him to correct right
now, finish his blocks. They’ll go to the tape and tell him,
‘You can block longer than you have been.’ That part I think
will be OK.
What concerns you more is his pad level and hands. He moves his
hands well and gets them on people, it’s just that his aiming
points are off. In pass protection his initial shot, it doesn’t
slow people down, it’s not shocking them, he’s giving up too
much ground. Some of those things he’ll fix, but I don’t know if
he can play guard. We’ve got a couple more preseason games to
see.
I like third-year pro T.J. Lang better at left guard. He was OK
Saturday night. They flip-flopped him and Sherrod, left guard
and left tackle, obviously trying to get a take on both guys.
Lang has a better punch at guard. Things happen at guard a
little faster than at tackle, and you have to be there right
now. At this point in camp I think Lang is probably the guy.

The remarkable rise of Zombo looks ready for a sequel.
(Yes, it’s Frank Zombo, Packers outside linebacker. But if
anyone should just have one name, it’s Zombo. Let’s do this.)
Zombo started nine games last year as an undrafted player,
including the Super Bowl. An injury to Erik Walden put Zombo
back in the starting lineup against Pittsburgh, and he’s stuck
there throughout training camp, despite a challenge from Walden
and last year’s Week One starter Brad Jones.
Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette says Zombo has been
the “most consistent” of the trio and clearly looks like the
favorite to start opposite Clay Matthews against the Saints
three weeks from Thursday. (Yes, it’s that soon. Sweet.)
Because this is Green Bay, Demovsky has “records” for all three
linebackers in 1-on-1 pass rush drills from camp. Which is
awesome. Zombo is 7-7, Walden is 6-11, and Jones is 4-15.
“My pass rush has been great. I think I’m dropping [into
coverage] well and I understand the defense,” Zombo said. “So
yeah, I feel like in a way it’s my job to lose.”

...Saine says pass protection - above all else - is what Green
Bay coaches value in their running backs. Not elusiveness in the
open field. Not lowering the kaboom between the tackles. Here in
Green Bay, where Aaron Rodgers is the Super Bowl MVP, the top
priority of the running back is no secret.
Whoever does it best will play.
"If you can't protect your quarterback," Saine said. "you're not
going to play."
