He considers his mentor a player who he views as having last
year been in the exact same situation he was, and after that
mentor played one more season for MSU he "got drafted again,
significantly higher," meaning a larger bonus.
Nothing definitive there, but it doesn't look good to me. Most
prospects seem uninterested in the fact that by signing a year
earlier they would likely make it to the majors a year earlier
and reach arbitration and free agency a year earlier and have
another year of salary as a major league player, if they ever
make it to the majors.

Hopefully his coach is doing a much better job of reading the
situation after presumably speaking directly with Mekkes than I
have done after nothing more than reading a newspaper article on
the internet....

There have been several reports saying he plans to sign; and
Michigan State's coach expects him to sign; and he talked about
how much $$ it would take for him to sign; and he and the Cubs
discussed that prior to them expending a draft pick on him.
He's going to sign. (Unless he fails his physical.)

I'm sure the Cubs talked to him before they picked him and got
the amount he wants. If they weren't sure they would have taken
him in the 11 round on.

Wes Saver, the CCDB guy, tweeted out the MSU coach saying the
Cubs and Mekkes agreed to a deal for a "significant" amount
above slot and close to the number he was looking for.
The Ole Miss closer is still in the air and one of the high
school guys has yet to announce if he is going to Arkansas or
sign with the Cubs.
