Watched a bit of Hatch NCAA game today. Could be an Adam Warren
type down the line. Pitches to contact, 6'1" and knows what he's
doing out there. Guessing Cubs would be happy if he turns out
like Warren.

7th rounder DH/C Michael Cruz was HBP 20 times this season in
200 ABs.
So, guessing he crowds the plate, has good plate coverage, has
guts, and might be a surprise if Cubs can find a position for
him. They passed on a lot of right-handed pitchers to draft this
guy.

No surprise but almost a lock that this late-rounder--who BA
pegged as high 4th rounder--not signing with Cubs and will be
going to Auburn. In past years, seems just the kind of HS
prospect Cubs might give the bonus the player wanted and could
sign. Not this year.

That is one butt-ugly kid. He's also already 19 when graduating
HS, and when you look at the comments from him and his father it
appears the kid is not really interested either in a college
education or the opportunity to play pro ball -- it seems he is
money focused an nothing else: “I had a couple chances (to agree
to sign and be drafted) but my family and I had a value for
Auburn and we stuck to it,” Daniel said.... Daniel’s father,
Rusty, said..... “Davis stuck to a value that he and our family
thought was appropriate to turn down the great opportunity at
Auburn.”

yea, reb, it's a different world since the CBA. I think it's
been since the CBA that the Cubs, and I think any team, have
signed a significant $$ guy after the 13th round.
Following 2nd day, a team pretty much knows about how much
discretionary $$ it has to spend, if any. Betrween Days 2 and 3
is the time to follow up with guys who were ranked high but
didn't get picked. Are you really going to stick to your $$$
expectations? Or given that we've got $175 available (or
whatever) would you consider signing for $275? If a 3rd-round
talent says yes, for money you think you'll have, I think you
pull the trigger and draft him within picks 11-13 before he's
gone to somebody else. No waiting for rounds 25-40.
I suspect any HS taken after round 20 is either:
1. A guy you have no expectation to sign for what you'll have
to spend. Just an "establish relationships for next time"
selection.
2. Somebody who so wants to sign that they'll do so for slot;
3. Somebody who wants more than slot, but would consider
signing for $200K or less. In other words, not a real
high-round talent.
The teams seem to have pretty well arranged agreements or
understandings of how much 1st/2nd day guys will sign for.
*But while in many cases I assume those are exact agreements
made over the phone, I suspect in some cases those are maybe a
little more approximate.
*Certainly Bryant or Almora, for example, didn't have exact
numbers agreed upon prior to actual selection.
*So if there is $0.1 uncertainty, or more, I'd think you might
take some HS guys in round 25-40 who might perhaps be signable
if you do end up with an extra $0.1 or more available in
discretionary money.
*But,certainly a kid like the Auburn kid wouldn't be signable
even if the Cubs did unexpectedly end up with $0.10 extra
available, if he'd been willing to go for $200 he'd have been
taken well before round 34.
*It's also so different from previous CBA's. A team would have
it's own internal draft budget, more or less, with a chunk
allocated to high picks. Teams would routinely select backup
options on 3rd day; if top pick decides not to sign, we want to
have some other talent that we could sign with the money not
spent on high pick. "If Hatch doesn't sign for XXX, maybe the
Auburn kid will; or we can split it between a couple of
late-round picks." But now, if you don't sign a high-round
pick, you lose both the slot money and the overage, so it
totally does not free up $$ for late round guys.
Really after the 13th round, you aren't going to draft and sign
anybody very pricey.

According to a couple interviews posted at CCDT.
Dante Biasi is leaning towards signing, but nothing is concrete.
A local paper said that without TJS he would have possibly been
a pick in the first 10 rounds. Doing rehab with a major league
team is a big plus for him. He is committed to Penn State and
his brother will be a junior on the team next year.
33 Rd pick Nate Sweeney has been offered $100,000 to sign and is
thinking about it. He is "not a big school guy."

Two overslots, Mekkes and Rucker, apparently both have
agreements and will sign, once they go through the process.

The Cubs lead the league in going after states, with the
selection of Dakota Mekkes and Montana Parsons.
Now if they can just sign free agent New Jersey Smith.
