Interesting:
MOBILE, Alabama – It was cloudy, windy and around 40 degrees.
All of it made for a moody NFL world during Senior Bowl
practices Wednesday afternoon at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile,
Alabama.
When strong winds carried away or knocked down passes, there
were audible groans in the stands where scouts, coaches, general
managers and others were seated.
North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz was the standout
exception. He excelled on that miserable afternoon, while others
struggled. There were several defenders who stood out all week,
but no player generated more buzz than Wentz during Senior Bowl
week.
“He definitely looks the part – he’s an NFL quarterback,” one
league evaluator said.
There are four quarterbacks who are considered first-round
material in this draft class: Wentz, Michigan State’s Connor
Cook, California’s Jared Goff and Memphis’ Paxton Lynch.
While Wentz captured the NFL’s attention on the field and in
talks with all teams, Cook’s draft status may fall after he
decided to sit out the Senior Bowl (Saturday at 1:30 p.m.) and
its practices.
Goff and Lynch are juniors, and Wentz either rates behind both
or between them depending on which scout or league executive you
approach.
“From the day I got invited, I knew I wanted to play in this
game,” Wentz said after practice Thursday. “All that matters is
what teams think. Whenever that draft-day call comes, I’m going
to be excited, and I’m going to have a new favorite team.”
Could it be the Bears?
The Cleveland Browns, San Diego Chargers, Dallas Cowboys and San
Francisco 49ers are four teams in front of the Bears in the
draft that may be looking at a first-round quarterback. But odds
are that at least one of the top quarterbacks will still be
available when the Bears draft at No. 11.
General manager Ryan Pace believes in the philosophy of taking a
quarterback every year, but he also has newfound faith in
quarterback Jay Cutler. The team’s decision is promote Dowell
Loggains to offensive coordinator after Adam Gase left to be the
Miami Dolphins’ head coach is the most obvious sign that they’re
committed to Cutler. The Bears opted for continuity because they
will continue with Cutler in 2016.
Overall, the selection of a quarterback at No. 11 would be
puzzling considering Cutler’s success last season and his
respected place on the team, not to mention all the other needs
the Bears have to address.
But what if Pace and other members of the Bears’ brass feel that
Goff, Lynch or Wentz can be a legitimate franchise quarterback?
Wouldn’t it be unwise to pass him up? He could sit and learn
behind Cutler for a full season or two.
All of it could make for serious discussions on draft day when
the clock is ticking and the Bears’ phones start clamoring with
potential trade offers. Plenty of teams behind the Bears in the
draft – the Philadelphia Eagles, St. Louis Rams, Buffalo Bills
and New York Jets to name a few – could be eyeing Wentz or the
others.
Wentz has the ideal size at 6-5, 233 pounds. He was a decorated,
record-setting quarterback at North Dakota State, which has won
five consecutive Football Championship Subdivision titles.
After his performances during Senior Bowl week, teams also have
very few reasons to be scared off by his small-school status. He
has an NFL arm.
“I don’t think there’s any specific throws [scouts wanted to
see],” said Wentz, who plans to take part in all drills at the
NFL Scouting Combine in February. “I think my film speaks for
itself — that I can make all throws. So out here, I was just
ready to come out, cut it loose and reaffirm those throws.”
Wentz did that during a miserable day in Mobile and then some.
He excelled with the NFL world closely watching.
“I’m just excited,” Wentz said, “to just keep playing this
game.”

I disagree. Cutler only has so long left plus you have to put
it out there that you are willing to take a QB so other teams
will trade up. If you truly believe the guy is a franchise QB
you take him. If not you try and get a lot of picks from
someone else. If you don't think he is a franchise QB you take
another player.

Good. You disagree. So use all your draft picks on QBs one in
each round.
We have so many defensive needs I cant imagine a more stupid
position to waste the #11 pick on. We need starters. We need
playmakers not backup QBs to sit on the bench for the next few
years.

I had enough trouble with last years #1 pick not being a
defensive stud. I was able to rationalize the need because of
Marshall but we need draft picks that play. Barring a season
ending injury to Cutler I cant imagine any QB at #11 actually
contributing more than holding a clipboard. Now were Cutler in
the last or next to last year of his contract or he were
regressing then I might see such a move as viable. Any QB taken
above the 4th round is a waste. We cant afford to waste draft
picks on clipboard carriers. Sorry for the vent, but we don't
need our own Osweiler here.

No. Just one each tear in the 4th or 5th round and an undrafted
FA. You will never miss them and have a shot at your next
Starting QB cheap. Maye the next Brady.

I just posted that because I thought it was interesting. What
if this kid is the next Aaron Rodgers and was a super star for
the next 10-12 years? Um yeah, I would take him. The million
dollar question is, is he the next great thing or just another
dud.

I'm with Pekin, if you think he is a franchise QB, you take him.
If you get a really good offer, you consider it.
I like Jay Cutler but he is 32 years old, he might have 3-4 good
years left in him but if you have a chance at the man, you take
him. Jay seems to miss a few games every year. You never know
when he might want to hang it up.
You don't pass on Andrew Luck just because you have Peyton
Manning.
shoot, you draft the QB, let him sit behind Jay, let him get
some game time the 2-3-4 games Jay is hurt every year. If he
plays well, you trade Jay next season for something. Someone
will give you something for Jay.

Did Andrew Luck last till #11? NO and there will be others
drafted before #11 too. Sorry. The #3 QB at #11over a defensive
stud? And to be JC's backup for the next couple years like
Osweiler? NO, you draft the best defensive player available.

Its not like we are discussing which way to go with the number 1
pick. Jay will get us thru a couple of years at least, but he
is never going to be a super star QB. If we have the chance to
grab the next Ben Rothlisberger at 11 do you take him? I know
our D has next to zero talent, besides Shea, but the QB is the
guy on offense that touches the ball every single play.... Just
saying.
