I would rather pay him 120 million over three years than have to
pay him 210 million over 7 years. There is substantial danger
that an injury could render him worthless by the 4th year.
       [/quote]That's 40M a year? I thought you meant 40M over 3. 40M
a year means you have one player taking up one third of your
payroll. Even Pujols couldn't make the Cardinals do that.

Guessing Heyward is pie in the sky. Just too expensive. Think
       Zobrist.
Let's say, hypothetically, trade Soler for Cleveland pitching.
Get Chisenhall back too in that deal. Sign Zobrist--kind of an
obvious target (along with a dozen other clubs). Sign Span for
CF. Probably no loss of draft picks with those guys. Keep IF
intact. Baez moves around infield. Bryant plays some corner
OF. Mostly Schwarber-Span-Zobrist OF, with Chisenhall off
bench. Catch Schwarber 40 or so games.
What you've done is (a) cut way down on Ks: Fowler 154 Ks (690
PAs) Span (in 2014) 65 Ks in 668 PAs; Zobrist 56 Ks (535 PAs)
Soler 145 Ks (501 career PAs). That's basically 200 Ks and way
more balls put in play just from two positions and (b) improved
OF defense. Yes, less HR power but a better balance--which Theo
talked about and/or implied in that presser.
Also, sign Lackey. That would cost a draft pick but Cubs sort
of get that pick "back" if Fowler signs elsewhere. Maybe only 7
or 8 picks later that Cubs late first-rounder. Would like both
picks but would be nice to win World Series in 2016 with some
       moves.
Bullpen trickier because remains to be seen who Cubs can re-sign
from guys Maddon depended on late in season. Obviously, add a
tough, reliable lefty. We know who those guys are out there.
Maddon couldn't go to Wood enough out of bullpen, from his
perspective, so think likely Wood is tendered and brought back.

Coghlan and Hammel were strong first half. Seems to happen a
lot. Keep both and look to upgrade at AS break.

Owners Management Council, or whatever they call it, is not
going to tolerate a $40 per season deal. Just like the Players
Union puts pressure on major free agents to sign market value
deals--so as not to have downward effect on other FAs--owners
too are very aware of how FA deals affect other organizations.
So, that is not going to happen in 2016. Of course, management
has to be careful about collusion--given their history--but they
are well aware of how big FA deals impact other players and know
when there is a bridge too far.

I could see either Coghlan and/or Hammel included in a
multi-player deal but otherwise no reason to move
either--standing alone. Not going to get back enough to make it
worth your while and brass is very aware of depth value.

Soler is made of glass and can't hit when it's cold. Marvelous
talent, but if they're going to move someone not named Castro,
       betting it's Soler.

I wouldn't be looking to trade any of our young, major league
level talent, yet. I don't want to oversimplify, but I'm not a
fan of converting young bats into young pitching.
The guys who are actually blocked aren't Baez or Castro. It's
Gleyber and Alcantarra who are "blocked." And they're not ready,
yet. Meanwhile the guys we have fill the diamond without
       overflowing it.
Kick the tires on Price. Target Samardzija. Identify a Bosio
reclamation project. Spend dollars on pitching. Not young
hitting talent. Once guys like Gleyber are knocking on the door,
       *then* you have a *surplus*.

I think Zobrist is a luxury we can't afford, especially if we
keep both Baez and Castro. Cubs have plenty of impact
positional flexibility that doesn't need to be paid $15M a year
to decline into mediocrity. If you have a LA or NY budget sure,
sign Zobrist because he's obviously a marvelously useful player.
       We don't.

It's not a matter of falling love with what you have...at least
not in my case. Rather it's about perspective. This team just
got through winning 97 games and knocking the two best regular
season teams out of the playoffs. I'm not motivated by love but
rather in the common sense of not fixin' what ain't broke.

Baez' utility may be replaced by Alcantara (he's still ours) or
Zobrist or keep Herrera. Heyward replaces Soler.
Really?! Alcantara represents utility player value at utility
player wages. Baez represents potential all-star at utility
player wages. How can those two things be equal?
Heyward replace Soler?! Which shall I address first? Your
       "pie" or your "sky"?
