I like Maeda, and I'd definitely make a run at him if he's
posted. I don't think he's TORP in the Majors, though - more
       like a solid mid-rotation guy.
I don't see Baez as surplus for the simple reason that there are
basically no other guys who can do what he does. Above-average
to exceptional defense at 3 infield spots, a willingness to move
anywhere on the field any day without complaint, and raw power
perhaps unequalled in the organization? Every team should have
       surplus guys like that.

Maeda is the Japenese guy if he gets posted. Their is a hard
throwing 25 year old Cuban by the name of Sierra. Guitirez and
Ruiz are IFA pool pitchers that really interest me. [/quote]

Thanks, guys. Theo talked about "high impact" pitcher. No idea
what our budget capacity will be. But, I'd love to see a winter
where they added both a "high impact" guy and also a
Sierra/Maeda as a second guy. To do all that while staffing CF
with either Fowler or somebody who's good, that might be kinda
       tough.
Price + Sierra? Zimmerman + Maeda? Could they afford that?

       I agree on Baez.
       1. Cubs need a utility infielder. Baez is an improvement over
Herrera. If they don't keep Baez then they will just have to go
out and get a Herrera at the same cost. Illogical. How many
teams can control a possible all-star at utility infielder
       wages?
       2. If the Cubs trade Castro (which I hope they don't) then
       Baez's value increases substantially.
       3. I think trading young talent, with great potential, with
favorable salary control is the exact opposite of "The
Philosophy". I think it would be a mistake to change horses (or
       utility infielders) in mid-stream.
Similarly, I think trading Soler would be counterproductive. I
think there is a natural tendency to want to make changes to
address perceived weaknesses. Never is this urge more powerful
than immediately after witnessing said weaknesses in a playoff
sweep. But making quick fixes is not what "The Philosophy" is
all about. As Craig said, "The Philosophy" is creating
       opportunities.

I mean if the Rays want to build a package for Archer around
Soler/Baez and a bunch of minor leaguers I would be happy to do
that. Short of somebody in Archer's class and clean injury
record I'm really not interested. CCO online mentioned Joe Ross,
Orduzzi, Tehran and Miley as possible trade targets as well. I'm
not sure I would be all that interest in Ordurzzi and Tehran as
they are more fly ball pitchers.
Craig I'm not sure how much work the bullpen will need. You have
Richards/Wood under control for 1 more year. Rondon/Strop/Grimm
as high leverage guys. Edwards will likely get a chance.
Rameriez and Turner will be in the mix. The Cubs seem to like
Cahill as well, so maybe you offer him a chance at the fifth
starter job with the intention of putting him in the bull pen.
I would love to see a high leverage lefty like McGee, but it is
more of a bonus than need.

I wouldn't be adverse to putting a package surrounding Soler or
Baez for Sonny Grey. Probably have to include Hendrick. Give
up more and get Burns to play CF.

Okay...but then you just have to out and replace Baez, Soler,
       and Hendrick.
Why not just keep Baez, Soler, and Hendrick and go out and buy a
       Sonny Gray-lite?

I think the math here is pretty straightforward. The Cubs have
an abundance of controllable, high-impact young position players
and no controllable, high-impact young pitchers. If there's an
opportunity to address a weakness using a strength (and somebody
like Salazar or Carrasco certainly qualifies) then you have to
at least explore it. If the deal doesn't add up then don't make
it, but that doesn't mean you don't explore the options.

Certainly you explore all options. And I agree, the Cubs have an
abundance of controllable, high impact position players. An
       abundance, not a surplus.

Denard Span for CF? He should have good range.

Nationals were ahead of the Mets by about 4 games when Span got
hurt just before all-star break. Follow the Nats and think this
was perhaps THE key injury that helped doom second half of their
season. Not expected to get a QO from Nats (Michael Taylor in
       CF).
But, Span had a very debilitating hip injury that won't be easy
to come back from. Came back in late August and hurt the hip
again almost immediately. A very nice player but have to worry
about whether he can play in 2016 at a high level. Maybe that
kind of thing is what fits Cubs--short term deal until Almora
ready, without a long term financial commitment-- but I view
Span as a big risk in terms of whether he can play effectively
given his health. Not sure you want to put all your CF eggs in
that basket. Obviously, will be a medical advice issue from Cubs
doctors if Cubs really interested in him.
