Get David Price and John Lackey, call it an offseason.

I hope the Cubs pass on both.

I don't understand why anyone would want to trade good young
talent, locked in at very reasonable cost. Seems to me that's
the reason you grow your own talent, so you can control it at
reasonable cost. Castro I understand. Soler makes less sense.
Baez is a possible star being controlled at utility infielder
       wages.

If you want to trade for a young, controllable starter with TOR
potential - and the Indians have two of them - Castro isn't
going to get it done as a centerpiece. Whether you'd rather
deal Soler or Baez is a reasonable disagreement, but I don't see
the Cubs getting that type of arm this offseason without trading
one of them. For me, Baez' defense and his offensive potential
outweighs Soler's offense given his limitations. Soler is a
corner OF, will only ever be a corner OF, and doesn't seem
likely to ever be a very good one. As such, he's more
replaceable than Baez if Baez continues the development he
       showed this season.

Trading for a TORP is going to be incredibly expensive. Carrasco
is the only pitcher I've seen mentioned that I would want, but
his shoulder issue at the end of year would scare me. Salazar
checks a lot of boxes. I believe he is a post TJS guy, so that
is concerning. One guy who would sorta interest me on the
Indians is Bauer. He would cost less and if Bosio could get
command under control he would be really interesting. Porcello,
if the Red Sox took on some money, or Miley with Jackie Bradley
Jr would be interesting, but I'm not sure their is a match. I
would much rather spend money than trade for pitching.

That might work if you're the Yankees or Red Sox or Dodgers -
which we're not - but then again, it might not. Spending
$150-200 million on 30 year-old pitchers is a noxious gamble to
       make.

There are other less expensive starting options on the free
       agent market besides Price.

I think Greinke is going to be almost as pricey and just as
risky as Price, and I'd steer clear of Cueto for obvious
reasons. Somebody like Zimmerman would be a logical target -
maybe for around 5/90 - or even Kazmir. But I don't think
that's enough on its own - you need two starters, and the Cubs
desperately need a young controllable SP with TORP upside.

If you don't get Price, I would touch any of those other guys. I
would drop down to Samardzija and that tier.
Can anyone explain why Gordo thinks the Cubs want Chisenhall
from the Indians? He's been below average on offense except for
1 small sample season and he was just average then. His defense
wasn't bad last year, especially in RF, but I can't imagine he'd
be more than a 4/5th OF and replace Coghlan. That would be a
       large downgrade on offense though.

I think the 2016 Cubs will be fine if they can add one starter-
Price. It they can do that, there's no reason to spend
significant resources on a middle to bottom of the rotation
starter. Use that money to deal with the problem in CF.

It's going to really help if Schwarber is able to catch a
significant number of games. In those games, the Cubs can go
with Bryant, Russell, Castro (or Baez), and Rizzo around the
horn with Coghlan, new CFer, Soler in the OF. On days where
Schwarber is not catching, he moves to LF and you can use either
Soler or Coghlan in RF depending on matchups. Baez can get
playing time by acting as a supersub in the infield.
In this scenario, they don't need to trade any of their young
talent. They key to improving will be to acquire one additional
TOR starter (Price), additional experience for our young
hitters, and acquiring a center fielder with very strong
defensive skills (especially range) to compensate for defensive
       weaknesses in the corner OFers.

Having just gotten dominated by controllable TORP SP makes me
really want some. But getting them is hard/risky/expensive.
The Mets way and the Hendry way (Prior/Wood/Z) is the best way:
draft and develop. Mets have hit it big with their guys, we'll
see how it goes and how long it lasts. Cubs have chosen not to
pursue that approach, haven't invested any first rounders, and
haven't clicked yet with any non-1st-rounders.
Having gotten dominated by young TORP talent pitchers makes that
seem critical. But, teams with TORP guys still often lose in
playoffs, too. Justin Verlander has started 16 games; not sure
Tigers are more than .500 in those games.
Teams can win WS without more than one TORP, and perhaps without
any. KC may do so this year; San Fran had only one last year.
Arrieta didn't pitch like one this round, but if he does next
       year, it's a different landscape.
