This front office has had great success with guys off the scrap
heap, or at least guys that improved greatly after acquisition.
Arrieta, Strop, Coghlan, Hendricks, Grimm, etc.
But in order to get several princes, you have to kiss a whole
lot of frogs.
E. Jackson, Volstad, Wright, Stewart, Cervenko, and perhaps even
Almora. Every front office hits home runs. Every front office
makes mistakes. The thing that impresses me most about this
group is not only that they make good personnel decisions (and I
think their decisions are better than most), but that they put
into place a strategy and process that increases the potential
for home runs, and lessens the potential for mistakes.

Guys like Edwin and Ian didn't make me doubt the front office as
much as their choices in managers. I mentioned Castro's fall
from grace. I wonder how much Sveum's retooling of Castro
screwed him up. Sveum was the Theocracy's primary blunder, as
far as I'm concerned, and they have survived it. Of course, to
get the job, Sveum had to have lied and kissed butt to get the
job in the first place.

I'd doubt Theo/Jed hired Sveum thinking he'd be the long-term
answer. He was a stopgap. Ricky very likely was, too.
If one of them had caught lightning in a bottle, they might have
stayed around a while, but it was clear the leaders were going
about things one way in the rebuilding process and things were
going to be very different when that process finished...and
that's certainly been the case.

I think that's revisionist history. Their initial praise for
Sveum was effusive. By year 2, less so.

I think that Sveum was hired because they thought he would be
helpful in the development of the young players. When he
wasn't, he was fired.
I think that Renteria was hired for the same reason, and proved
to be quite good at it.
But then, a manager became available that was everything that
Renteria was, plus had a substantial track record of success in
other areas. He was too good to pass up, and the front office
was not stupid enough to pass him up.

Sveum was hired because they thought he would be the second
coming of Terry Francona. sheesh. When it because obvious that
he was resistant to many of the "Cub Ways" being put in place,
he was warned and then fired.
Look the front office has been SUPER in every aspect from trying
to remodel Wrigley to their drafting to their scouting to their
piecing together of a team to changing the culture. They're
great. Not perfect.

The Phillies seem to have a 2B/SS guys that they want to give
time to until Crawford comes up, so I don't see a fit. The
Padres/Mets seem to be the best fits. The Rockies might be a
possibility if they can dump Reyes. The Rays might also be
looking for a SS.
