They may not have the luxury of choosing who starts a single
game playoff. Arrieta and/or Lester may be needed the last game
of two of the season merely to get into that single playoff
game.
With our luck, Haren is likely to be the pitcher in the playoff
game.

Cubs last won 14 of 15 in 2001 when they went on to finish third
in the Central with 88 wins.

Coghlan has been healthy now for back-to-back seasons. May be
that his injuries past were coincidence. He's got a .759 OPS
and .332 OBP, after .804/.352 last year, and .746/.339 career.
I think it's reasonable to think at this point that he is what
he is, and it's not fluke.
When Cubs hired Theo, I wondered how transferable the Boston
success could be. I perceived much of the Boston success being
built on some inherited players, and some acquired cheaply who
worked out (David Ortiz. Also Bill Mueller and Mark Bellhorn.)
Would Theo be able to recapture that kind of success in creating
value out of nothing from cheap investments?
Apparently yes. Now here we sit with with:
1. Coghlan and Clayton Richard picked up as 4A's.
2. Rondon as a Rule 5.
3. Arrieta created out of a cheap fringe-rotation FA signing.
3. Strop ditto.
4. Fowler from Valbuena
5. Hammel as a low-cost pickup.
etc. (Russell, Montero, ...)

Really this whole bullpen, which has been doing great, has been
assembled in a makeshift way.
Rondon, rule 5
Strop, 2nd piece in the incredible Feldman trade.
Grimm, at the time seemed like the 3rd or 4th piece in the Garza
trade.
Motte, cheap FA
Richard, street 4A FA.
Russell, street 4A FA.
Wood, fringy failing starter convert.
Wood is really the only one who was a high draft-pick whose
original acquisition cost serious talent. Pretty remarkable
assembly of a highly functional pen.

Every successful team has to be knit from a variety of sources.
It's nice to recoup a couple of castoffs into stars. I see
Arrieta and Coghlan as such. Together with some established
major leaguers like Lester, Montero, and Rizzo, you have the
makings of a good team when the rookies begin to show up. I
think the front office was counting on Castro to be part of
that, too, but you can't have everything. Fowler, Hammels,
Grimm, Strop, and Motte were nice pickups too. Love it when a
plan comes together.
