My recollection is he was considering retirement this year, but
then got two offers to play, one from the Cubs plus an appeal
from his old buddy. I suppose if he says he wants to play...

I'd be stunned if Miggy isn't the primary catcher next year.
Schwarber will get his games in behind the plate, but Miggy will
carry the weight. For as much as the Cubs seem to value Ross'
leadership and presence, he must bring some significant value to
the table on that front. If I were Theo, I'd see if I could
persuade Ross to stay on as a coach or something, because I
don't see room for 3 C's with the way Maddon uses the bullpen.

Ross signed a two-year deal.
Doesn't seem like anything has changed that would cause him to
walk away from his contract.
And Cubs seem to love the guy. Of course, brass didn't
anticipate during past Winter that Schwarber would be here now.
But my sense is they want Ross back.
As to Tico's point about 3 catchers, if Schwarber is starting
100 games in LF--it's not really a roster problem to carry
Montero and Ross. Think of Schwarber as a LF starter, plus bench
of Ross, IF reserve, and 2 more OFers.

If Schwarber is playing a majority of the games in LF, he won't
be a catcher long term. He is still getting side work in at
catcher, but at some point he's going to need game experience.
Ross will be back next year. I doubt a good defensive catcher
with a league average bat would be mor difficult to trade than
Castro. Plenty of teams could use a catcher.

Tonight was walk off win #11. Most since the 1932 Cubbies walked
off 13 times. How does this team compare to that one, DaveP?

If going to trade Montero, have to do it during Winter when
teams still planning payroll. Not saying couldn't find a taker
then. But, thereafter, no---not a $14 guy when clubs have
already worked their budget.
Put another way, not realistic to see if Schwarber can develop
primary catching skills during season--and then unload Montero
and his $14 during season. (2017 too but another issue).
That's why asked question: are Cubs ready to open 2016 with
Schwarber as primary catcher?
Myself, I don't see that. Guessing he's going to be primary LFer
next season, while getting average of 1 1/2 games per week
catching. In other words, same plan as what seems to be plan for
remainder of this season.

You seem to assume no one could be traded, or at least not to
entertain that possibility.
