Russell will make errors but not because he wasn't focused or
just being sloppy. I have much more confidence in him. I
thought Castro would be the great star for years...don't know
what happened to him.

It's been said, but I think Castro is the prototypical Needs a
Change of Scenery guy. He's been hearing the Baez footsteps and
then the Russell footsteps for a while now--maybe he just
couldn't handle the pressure. Or maybe the pressure of being
The star on some really crappy teams got to him. Who knows?
It seems unfortunate for him that they couldn't deal him at the
deadline, but I guess they don't want to just give him away.
Maybe you still want him around as a potential backup? In case
of injury? If it were up to me, I'm kicking myself for not
trading him last offseason.

If the Cubs had known that Russell would be contributing in such
a big way at the ML level already, they would probably have
dealt Castro during the offseason. But given what they knew at
the time, holding on to him can't really be considered a
mistake.

Not trading a 25 year old 3 WAR SS isn't a mistake, darn shame
he imploded like he did. Hopefully to trade him they won't have
to take a bad contract back.

Yeah, I'm not saying that *they* made a mistake, because I don't
know what they were thinking in terms of long-term plans. I'm
just remembering that in the off-season I had just about
convinced *myself* that they should go ahead and trade Castro
because I believed in Baez and Russell. It seemed pretty clear
to me that Castro was going to get traded at some point, so why
not go ahead and roll the dice on the other guys. Then I bought
into the "it's too early to trade him" talk.
Why is this important? It isn't. IF I had boldly proclaimed
(not my style) that they should trade Castro now in the
offseason, then I could shower all of you with ITYS and pat
myself on the back (also not my style).
Just kinda looking back on my own perceptions and wondering a
bit about what the Theocracy think. It goes along with most of
the cool interworkings of the baseball braintrust--would love to
know but probably never will.

I think it shows that being a GM is really hard and I'm glad it
is Theo/Jed. Their mistakes have been realatively minor and
their successes have been HR.
I still think outside of Chicago Castro can still have a really
good career.

Clubs thinking about trading for Castro first have to assess
odds of a return to form.
Is it 75%? 60%? 40%? 85%?
If he returns to form---it's a club friendly deal (again).
The contract--starting 2016--is 4/$38. If the assessment is 75%
return to form and 25% the 2015 guy, then perhaps his worth is
75% of that deal, less the risk he might be worth zero. If
Castro was a FA, obviously not a candidate for a 4-year deal,
nor would he seek a 4-year deal given need to re-establish
value.
So, guessing Cubs can get good value back from a club with
assessment of high % return-to-form but with Cubs having to
include another good piece as a premium for chance Castro worth
zero. Perhaps some cash too depending on the 2nd guy.
Think Castro situation is fundamentally different than the age
30+ FA washout guys because Castro will be age 26 all of 2016
season and high likelihood 2015 woes are a mechanical thing and
not a guy showing his age or otherwise past his prime--injuries,
etc. i.e., greater chance of return to form.
Probably not a simple trade to make but a little creativity
needed. Don't think Cubs will have to take back an undesirable
piece as the only return.

"Sometimes" is not necessarily now. There is no urgency in such
a decision.
