Yeah, maybe we could just get a list of topics and points that
are settled unanimously with everybody on board--and then we can
avoid any dead horse posts crowding out what others may want to
say.

Going off of the Fangraphs list for LF, I didn't limit it to NL
only
2013 Mike Trout
2012 Mike Trout, Ryan Braun, Josh Hamilton, Josh Willingham
2011 Ryan Braun, Matt Holliday, Mike Morse
2011 Matt Holliday was worth 4.4 fWAR, I think that would be a
decent comp for what Schwarber would be worth in LF. Joe Maur
with below average defense and a .860 OPS was worth 4.5 fWAR in
2012. That doesn't even count pitch framing, which Schwarber
doesn't seem to be bad at.

As Jeff would say, I was doing a bit. Apologies if you don't

Schwarber and the Cubs have both expressed an extremely strong
desire to him to catch, though both have also been very clear
that they recognize he needs a good deal more development to be
a regular catcher. I agree that absent a serious decline at the
plate, it is very hard to see the Cubs sending him back down to
AAA to develop those skills. But being the 2nd of 3 catchers on
the roster, getting 2-3 starts behind the plate each week, and
starting the rest of the time in LF could still allow that
development, even if a bit more slowly.
I still think a Berra/Howard approach with Schwarber and
Contreras, with Contreras also additional lineup flexibility at
3B and 1B, would be extremely valuable as a means of helping
keep a fresh bat at catcher.

That, incidentally, was not "slightly below average" LFer but
rather "pretty good" LFer, which is different.

If Schwarber were defensively a "pretty good LFer" he would
still be vastly more valuable with his bat behind the plate as
an acceptable every day catcher.

I should have been more clear. The line that jumped out at me
and seemed sure to provoke a lengthy discussion to see things

Schwarber's position next year may be decided in Spring Training
next year, when he catches Arrieta, Lester, Edwards, Rondon and
hopefully Ramirez in games that don't count in the standings.

Yeah, you're right, I should leave that one alone already. (But
now, next time somebody posts that have to dominate a level to
get promoted, I expect you to explain why not). 8)
