On Soler, it seems like all of his contact is hard hit line
drives. He doesn't get much loft on the ball. Think they'll
work on that in the offseason to see his HR numbers take off?

Yeah, Len and JD talked a bit about that this weekend.
From my perspective, the issue is hitting hard line drives MORE
OFTEN and putting the ball in play. Not sure why anybody would
change a guy's swing--to get loft--if the ball is coming off the
bat at terrific velocity with a ton of line drives.
Tell you a guy who hit with that profile: Hank Aaron in his
prime with Milwaukee Braves---before he became dead pull hitter
in later years. Homers will come with a terrific line drive
swing and consistent contact, but hard contact is a really good
thing if the guy is doing it well. Bryant does it differently.
Fine. Different strokes for different folks.

If you want to believe that Babe Ruth is Bryant's ceiling, then
you can choose to believe that about Soler. Your call.

The Phillies have Utley on waivers. I wonder if a team will put
a claim on him or if he will make it to the open market. If his
struggles were really the injury he could quite valuable to
have. Since his option won't vest, he doesn't have a ton money
left on his deal. If I was the Cubs I would put in a claim and
try and work out a trade.

I think he'll get through waivers.
The Phillies picked up Tyler Pastornicky from the Rangers in a
minor deal today. He's the type of player you'd expect them to
bring in to finish the season if they were going to deal
Utley--still young, still with at least major league bench
upside--so that could be a sign that they intend to make a
trade.

According to Cot's, in 9/14, Utley satisfied a provision in his
contract that bumped his 2015 salary to $15.
Therefore, he has about $4.5 left that is guaranteed this
season, plus a $ 2 buyout for 2016.
$6.5 for remainder of season. Agree with BR that very unlikely
any club will put in a claim and be on hook for that for less
than 1/3 of season.
So, that alone would seem to get Utley thru waivers. As a 10/5
player, he can veto any trade. So, that puts Utley in control
over where he goes, if anywhere. Cubs might be attractive to
him, especially if promised lots of playing time.
Updated report says end of waiver period for him is Tuesday.
