Cubs are facing Locke for 4th time this season: three in April
and May. 3.2 IP, 6 hits, 5 runs, 3 walks. Before that- 3.2 IP, 8
hits, 5 earned runs, 3 walks, then, 5 IP, 7 hits , 4 runs, 3
walks. Being the Cubs, Locke still managed 16 Ks in these poor
outings.

If the Cubs scored 14 runs in 12 IP, why does it matter if they
struck out 16 times?

I wonder if Schwarber will start tonight. Even against a lefty,
I would rather have him at the plate instead of Ross.

I don't want to discuss that at all. The Cubs scored runs off
of Locke, why does it matter if they K'd is what I'm curious
about. If they K'd 37 times against and still scored 15 runs in
12.1 IP I don't think I'd care.

Yeah, I'll take the runs.
It still matters, however, as Cubs are a K machine and don't
always score much with the Ks.
Even yesterday, pounded out lots of hits but still had uneasy
feeling as Cubs should have scored more than 5 runs. But, 14 Ks.
Don't move up base runners enough with all the Ks and hard to
get lucky with a batted ball when not putting the ball in play.
We all know the Ks are not good in the aggregate.

Let's say it again: converse of a strikeout is NOT "any other
kind of out." Converse of a strikeout is a ball put in play in
some form. In the long run, not going to have an efficient
offense with 14 Ks a game.

I'm more concerned about the lack of HR to go with K's to be
honest.
It isn't fair to compare the Astros to the Cubs because of the
DH, but I'm going to anyway.
Astros 23.7% K, 8.1% BB, 485 R, 152 HR
Cubs 24.1% K, 9% BB, 405 R, 95 HR

The Cubs are leading the majors in strikeouts, and likely not
coincidentally, are second from the bottom in base hits.
Getting base hits is important, and we're not very good at that.

Lack of HR?
Cubs are # 5 in NL in homers. Top 1/3 in league--and wind has
been blowing in at Wrigley a lot so far.
Look at the overall numbers. Cubs are # 1 in walks and #5 in
homers. Really good combo, right?
But, # 11 in runs scored.
A big reason, the primary reason, is that Cubs are #1 in Ks---by
a ridiculously wide margin. NL average team has 821 Ks. Cubs
have 967 Ks. The second higgest Ks is 897---70 fewer than Cubs!
That' s second highest team.
All the Ks translate to way, way fewer balls in play. Hence, way
lower batting average.
Where do Cubs rank in batting average? Rank # 14.
Pretty evident Ks are a problem. Hard to watch this club every
day and not see that.
