Wasn't Greg Maddux also reluctant to throw over to first?

I remember reading about Lester's reluctance (refusal?) to throw
to 1B to hold runners on. I think I remember Ross talking about
other adjustments he made to compensate - specifically varying
how long he held the ball before pitching. All teams have
scouts and I cannot imagine any team that had scouted Lester was
unaware of this issue.
Just about everything tends to be blown out of proportion on the
opening game. If the Cubs had lit up Wainwright, some would
have concluded that this means the Cubs are destined to the
playoffs and/or that Wainwright is over the hill. Everybody
knows the season is a long 162 games, yet every year we tend to
forget that in the heat of the moment.

and yes, the announcers last night made the game seem so boring,
or was something that was going on while they talked about stuff

This should be a disclaimer for this thread. Many things get
said.

Indeed. My understanding is that last year was the first year
he didn't throw. May be that it took teams a while last year to
realize he wouldn't/couldn't throw over, so perhaps the impact
wasn't as significant at first. May also have been that some
bidders this winter (perhaps including Cubs?) thought he'd be
able to shake it with a clear spring start.
It will be interesting to see how regularly teams steal on him
over the next six years if he doesn't come up with something.

If he limits himself to perfect games, it's no big deal.

According to last night's announcers, he is not only reluctant
to throw to first on attempted pickoff plays, but he is also
reluctant to throw to any base at any time. Last night, they
said he had a play at third base, but instead ran towards first
base and tossed it underhand to Rizzo.
He did indeed do that, but I have no idea if it is a common
thing for him.
Most of us remember that Garza also had (has) a problem throwing
to bases.
