Winter's strike zone was also partly to blame. How did he pull
the assignment on opening night on national TV? Wainwright is
tough enough but give him an extra 6 inches off the plate and
forget about it. Not saying it would have been different but
that strike zone reminded me of the 90's Braves pitching staff
who seemed to get that kind of zone every day.

Dave, my attitude actually surprised me. I guess after 5 years
of conditioning it was just too easy to slip into IDGAF mode.
Even in bad years I used to live and die with every pitch. It's
a little depressing to me to realize how jaded I've become. Now
all of that is not to say I believe any less this will be a good
year or a reaction to one night in a long long season. It was
more a commentary about myself I guess. Again, I hope the Cubs
will make me a believer this year. I think they have the talent
to do it. I just hope that guys like Starlin Castro don't have
the same problem I do.

I think Yadier is just that good of a pitch framer, myself. :)

Yadier looks like an old man now with his weight loss. He sure
didn't look like much at the plate and allowed LaStella to steal
a base on him. If I was a Cards fan Molina's play last night
would have me worried.

Not to rehash the whole pitch framing debate, but how do these
pitch framing metrics adjust for home plate umpires like Winters
last night? If Yadier's pitchers are getting six inches off the
plate from Winters, it seems like Yadier's pitch framing
performance should be off the charts last night.

Actually, the announcers were praising both Ross and Yadier's
pitch framing. Last night's game really demonstrated how bad
umpiring can impact the action and the outcome. Both teams had
to swing at pitches that weren't strikes.

stopped throwing to first a couple of years ago. I think the
prevailing thought was that his move was so good nobody took a
big lead, but now...

So, based on our experience with other yipsters, this is
probably going to be a reality for the next $154 million of his
contract, huh? I wonder if they'll try to get him to throw over
there anyway, and get past it? Or, if that would risk messing
up his pitching brain too, so he'd not be able to pitch either?
So, would that have been a game without Ross's pitch framing and
pitch calling Lester would have given up a lot more runs with
Castillo or somebody?

broadcasts.

Yeah I wonder how ESPN picks these guys. Honestly I can't
remember the last ESPN color commentator that I liked.
It just seems like a lot of those guys just don't take their
jobs too seriously and treat it as something of a side gig or
for something just to do after they retire.
Maybe one difference with a guy like Jim Deshaies is that he
didn't make nearly the money that guys like John Kruk, Curt
Schilling, or most of the "name" guys ESPN brings in, so he
prepares harder and takes his job much more seriously.

Read that 31% of all at-bats last night resulted in strike outs.
If accurate, it's like a whole game of Mike Olt at bat. But,
what, at least 6 Ks were directly because of incompetent
umpiring? If baseball wants more offense, then automate the
zone. Who knows what happens if a half-dozen K's in a game like
that had different outcomes (and, yes, I realize probably 4 or 5
would have just ended in different kids of outs).

Oh I certainly don't doubt that they're good at that.
