Just get him to sign a 7+ year deal at a reasonable price.

The problem there is that the market value of the 7th year
depends on whether that year is a free agent eligible year or an
arb eligible year--worth a lot more if it's a free agent
eligible year. So, you have a negotiating hurdle right there,
aside from the other difficulties.

The seventh year is almost certainly not going to be a free
agent year, unless the rules are changed.

You misunderstand what I was trying to say. The 7th year is
2021 for Bryant. For extension purposes, that will either be an
arb year or a FA year, depending on what happens April 2015.

I understood. But I believe that 2021 is almost certainly going
to be an arb year. It will only be a free agent year if he
breaks with the team in April, which does not seem likely at
this point. There isn't usually a strong incentive to contract
out an arb this soon in a career, so if they were to enter into
a long term contract this spring, it would almost have to be an
8 year contract at least.

Good grief, how many media articles and bleacher-bums posts per
day do we need to have on this issue? We get it. There's a CBA
that defines the rules, and it influences decisions. Check. We
get it.
The CBA lasts through 2016.

I don't understand how this CBA thing works. Can someone
explain it to me?

I think it's an old basketball league that Isiah Thomas burned
to the ground, right?

I haven't seen Craig this irritated since that rumor of Nic
Jackson coming out of retirement was floated.
