I'm mulling over the same three options.

Chcgojhawk, thanks for your excellent insights re catching based
on your experience...makes sense.
One of the best catcher coaches I've been around talks about
setup as key...if the catcher doesn't get low enough (or set up
in the right place), he ends up having to significantly move his
mitt OR head...either of which make it difficult to get framing
breaks.
Of course, the pure receiving skills (catching the ball softly
rather than stabbing as Castillo tends to do) are critical, too.
The best receivers (e.g. the Molinas) make that mitt look like
an extension of their left hand.

Not sure I'm remembering it right, but I think Theo (or was it
McLeod?) commented regarding Schwarber. That the
pitch-recognition that helps him as a hitter also helps him as a
catcher.

Craig, I think it was Tim Cossins, Cubs Minors Catching
Coordinator (or something like that), who made the comment re
Schwarber's pitch recognition helping his catching.

Russell Martin's gonna make the contract Theo gave Edwin Jackson
look like a hometown discount.

I have to admit, there's part of me that thinks you might be
right about that.
