It'd be nice to have a respected veteran around to mentor
Schwarber when the time comes (assuming he doesn't flame out as
       a catcher).

I really like what Martin would bring to the team.
I'm really scared about how a 32 year old catcher is going to
age. He should be worth it, if he isn't then like Reb said the
Cubs could absorb it. I wonder if the Cubs sign him, if they
don't go shopping for more of the compensation pick players.
Losing 3rd or 4th round picks for a quality MLB player is a good
       trade.

I keep checking for updates. I have concluded this is going to
       be a long, slow winter.

Does anyone know what Castillo's fWAR was for last year? Where
       can it be found?

Castillo's fWAR is on his Fangraphs page:
  HTML http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=3256&position=C.

       He had a 2.2 fWAR in 2014.
But if you believe the metrics, he cost his team 24.3 runs with
       bad pitch framing:
  HTML http://www.statcorner.com/CatcherReport.php.

General rule of thumb is that 10 runs equal a win, so he pretty
much killed all his positive value with bad pitch framing.
A league average player posts about 2 WAR in a season. Even if
you think that pitch framing metric is three times what it
should be, his pitch framing made him a below average overall
       player this year.

The primary complaint about Castillo is his framing. Can that
be learned or is he hopeless?

       Both?
He might be able to be able to improve it a little bit. Jason
Castro improved on his pitch framing. The problem with Castillo
is he stabs at the ball, and for pitch framing you need to have
little movement when catching the ball. If he hasn't improved
on it yet, he might not be able to.

Somewhere in MLB there has to be an umpire who sees the catcher
pull an outside pitch into the strike zone and says: "Wait a
minute, you just told me it was outside so I'm calling it a
       ball".
Didn't Darren Dalton make framing what it is today?

Would like to see W. Castillo a back-up in the future. Never
been a fan of his overall game. Aside from stats already
mentioned above, think he struggles keeping up with the pitching
staff in terms of attacking hitters. So, would like to see an
       upgrade.
Think a Martin signing philosophically would be somewhat similar
to Nats signing of Jayson Werth after 2010 season, as has been
       discussed here before.
Nats were coming off a 69-93 season in 2010 but knew, based on
farm system and young talent, that they would be a contender
soon (Nats went 80-81 in 2011 and upward thereafter of course).
Nats wanted a team leader guy who was also a good player and had
been on some winning clubs. So, Nats gave Werth, at age 32 in
       first season, a 7-year deal averaging $18.
Mike Rizzo is a smart guy and knew it was overpay or sorts but
identified Werth as an asset that the club did not have going
forward as a winning organization. Werth was the right guy in
       Nats' eyes.
Not saying Martin is an exact analogy (given catcher aging, etc)
but philosophically pretty similar, if it happens. Assuming it
happens, many will find it an overpay long-term. But, the most
important thing is whether or not Martin is the right guy to do
a deal like this. Is he?
In Werth's case, he was coming off best season of his career in
2010 but it wasn't terribly out of line with his previous
seasons going into 2010. Maybe Martin's 2014 more of an
outlier? In any case, think it boils down to a bit more than
numbers with these guys. Theo/Hoyer will do the "due diligence"
thing regarding all the intangibles. Boils down to the right
       guy or not.
If Martin is signed, guessing that Theo will say at the presser
that Martin keeps in extraordinary physical condition that
convinced them to do the deal for a catcher his age and that all
the other intangibles are off the charts. Let's hope it's true
if it happens. Would rather give Martin a bit more per season
(on a 4-year deal) than give him a 5-year deal. If Dodgers get
in, wouldn't surprise me at all if Dodgers go 5 years. Good
       luck with that.

I believe that Martin has been named the Wilson Best Defensive
Player of the Year Award (among catchers). Another guy who has
been discussed here, Jason Heyward was named Wilson Best
Defensive Player of the Year among all positions.
