Wow. Zimmerman would be awesome, but only if they sign him long
term. I trust the Cubs wouldn't trade significant assets for
Zimmerman if it was only for one season. Nationals would
probBly be interested in an infielder since they have been
having trouble signing Ian Desmond long term and he may be gone
next season.

Rumor is that they want Castro, Baez or Russell, plus lesser
prospects.

Castro should have more value than Zimmermann at this point when
you consider contracts. Above average SS at a reasonable price
for 5 years > ace starter for 1 year. If Castro is involved, it
has to be a blockbuster where both teams get multiple players.
I can't imagine Baez or Russell being traded without an
extension in place. Without an extension, Alcantara has to be
the centerpiece.

Some updated tweets in the last few minutes...
Kaplan says the Cubs are interested in Zimmermann and it would
take more than $100 million to extend him.
Paul Sullivan and Jesse Rogers both say nothing is going
on...but really, it's Sullivan and Rogers.
But Patrick Mooney says the Cubs are not working on a deal, so
that throws some cold water on the rumor.

I'd be willing to seriously consider including Baez in some
significant deal. Whether Hamels, or Zimmerman, or somebody
else, I'd be pretty open to think about it. I'm not saying Baez
for Zimmerman would be good; and some contract discussion would
be needed, or sense of the man and his agent. But if my read of
the man and his interests suggested that he'd be pretty willing
to extend for a fair contract, I'd like to talk about it and I'd
not just write it off as a no-brainer no.
I think Baez is going to be a useful player. I'm imagining
35HR, with 40BB and 200K. That would project to around .760 OPS,
good for a middle infielder but not so amazing that we shouldn't
consider discussing him. If he was the core piece in a Hamels
trade, it's not like a Bryant-Castro-Russell-Rizzo infield would
be regretting him forever. And even short-term, before Russell
arrives, Alcantara/Valbuena might cover 2b pretty nicely for
this year and perhaps beyond.
So, I think I'd be open to fair discussions involving Baez.

Whatever happened to the philosophy that "home runs are an
efficient way to score runs"?
I think that if Baez hits 35 home runs per year, the Cubs will
miss him.
