I think the no trade clause is used as leverage for a lot of
players. But in Upton's case, I think he probably just doesn't
want to play for the teams he listed. If he was just trying to
increase his leverage, I think there would've been better teams
to list than Cleveland, Toronto, and Milwaukee.

From Joel Sherman, regarding Dodgers outfielders:

       >
       > Dodgers officials have let teams know they are willing to kick
in cash or take a problematic contract back to facilitate a
trade. For example, the Dodgers are looking for a veteran
back-end-of-the-rotation piece, so could they counteract some of
the cash by trading Ethier or Crawford to the White Sox for John
Danks (owed $28.5 million the next two years) or to the Orioles
for Ubaldo Jimenez (owed $37.75 million over the next three
       years).
       >
       --- End Quote ---
I don't think the Cubs should take on Ethier in any situation.
But if they'd take Jackson back for Crawford and chipped in a
lot of money, is there a point where it makes sense? Jackson
has 2/$22 left, while Crawford has 3/$62.5 left on his deal.

I think the simple answer is "if Crawford were a free agent,
what would you pay to sign him. I suppose that freeing up a 40
man spot and a spot in the bullpen has some value, but on the
other hand, Jackson probably has SOME value to the Cubs as a
middle releiver. If you assume that Jackson is worth nothing to
the Cubs, the trade would have the same effect as signing
       Crawford for 3/40.5.
I don't think that most of us would make that signing, but there
is some point where we would consider it worthwhile. If we
would sign Crawford at 3/20, for instance, then the Dodgers
would have to toss in 20 million to make the trade worthwhile.

Crawford's fWAR was 2.5 in 105 games. That 2.5 put him at
basically the same level as Melky and Markakis and guys Brandon
Moss and John Jay. Coghlan has an fWAR of 2.1
So, he's less terrible than I thought. But not sure there is
much appeal in having him for 3 years.

Isn't Theo the one who signed Crawford to that albatross
contract? He seems pretty pragmatic, but I suppose there's a
chance Theo wouldn't want to go back to That Place.

There's no reason both can't be true.
He might not wanna play in Toronto, Cleveland and Milwaukee but
would consider the Cubs, if given an extension.

Crawford has played under both Maddon and Epstein, so whatever
decision they make on him will certainly be an informed one.

Well we could always take that bum Harper off their hands.
I wonder what they would want for him? Castro, Alcantarra,
       Edwards?
