Olney now clarifies his tweet: the Cubs are NOT on Hamels' no
trade list, so he can be traded to Chicago without his
permission. So he still has the two year advantage over Lester.

The Hamels pursuit is way-more interesting if Cubs would only be
on hook for 4 years.
Still not sure what that means in how much they would
realistically be expected to give up in terms of prospects. I'm
ok with trading for him if it hurts a little (some combo from
among
Alcantara/Almora/Hendricks/Grimm/Johnson/Vogelbach/McKinney;
maybe even Edwards or Ramirez or Rondon could be added). But
still not ok in a deal which would hurt (any of
Castro/Baez/Russel/Soler; assuming Bryant is not even remotely
available).

I read earlier that Hamels did have the Red Sox as one of the
teams he can't be traded to without his permission. If that's
the case, it gives the Cubs a little leverage over them in trade
talks. All along, the Cubs and Red Sox have really been the
only two teams frequently connected to Hamels.
Also, I think not listing the Cubs sends the message that Hamels
is pretty interested in playing for them.

A Hamels trade would be interesting if the Phillies had a
different GM. I can't think of a way that they wouldn't ask for
one of if not multiples of Bryant/Castro/Baez/Soler.

Maybe Phils could be more realistic with Gillick on board as
team president, especially with him saying publicly that Phils
probably not a contender next couple of seasons. It's not just
Amaro in charge of a major undertaking such as moving Hamels.

Current rumor is they want 3 top prospects, 2 of which being
major league ready. I guess they could have a broad definition
of top prospect.

An insider on PSD seems to think that the Mets may come after
Starlin Castro with some aggressive offers. I don't think he
has any hard info, just previous rumors of the Mets interest in
him.

I read somewhere yesterday that the Phillies would have interest
in Castillo if the Cubs traded him. I know he's not a
prospect...but if he could sub for one of the ML ready prospects
and they'd accept Alcantara as the second one, that could be a
good starting point.

I would listen. It seems a bit early to trade Castro, but I'd
do it if I thought I was getting maximum return. Put Baez at
short, Alcantara at second, and sign someone anti-awful to play
center.

And if so, don't bother wasting money on Lester or any other
premium starter, but just play for the draft pick another
season.
