Perhaps I'm wrong, but I think there's a decent chance a
connection between Torii Hunter in the Cubs might be in the
"Agent Driven" category.

Cubs Den has Martin asking for 5 years, $75-80 million. He also
maybe interested in moving away from catching. These would make
him less interesting to me.

Mets make the first big free agent move by signing Cuddyer to a
2 year deal. They're sacrificing their first round draft pick
for him.
The Mets should spend a lot of money now that they've given up
their first rounder. A wild card spot is well within their
reach since they'll be playing so many games against the Braves,
Marlins, and Phillies.

Not sure what kind of legs and wheels Torii Hunter has at age
39. But that guy was a great CFer in his day. Back in his
Twins years, seems like he was on the Minnesota TV highlights
all the time making fantastic catches. But, obviously age takes
the speed off; after 9 consecutive gold gloves, he hasn't won
one of those in five years.
If veteran leadership is what they want, he'd actually be
terrific. Totally a class act, super nice and personable guy,
and very professional guy. Really easy to like guy. 8 years of
post-season experience with three different organizations.
If leadership qualities are what's wanted, a year or two of
Torii Hunter might be a better value than $75/5 of Martin.
Hunter hasn't been a regular CF for a couple years, but I don't
doubt that he'd be better defensively than Alcantara. And
either could play some left.
I'm not saying it's at all realistic. But Torii is as good for
veteran-guy-character as Hoyer could imagine, I think.

Hunter is a LF/RF only now. His kid is a soph. WR at Notre
Dame, so being close by in Chicago would be a plus for him.
Giving up a first round pick for Cuddyer only makes sense if the
they are going after multiple QO players.

I just don't see a lot of choices for them on the free agent
market, though. Wright, Murphy, Duda, D'Arnaud, Cuddyer, and
Granderson are locked in. There are no free agent
centerfielders who got qualifying offers. And I don't think
Hanley is going to get many offers to play shortstop this
offseason, especially on a team where third base is covered for
the forseeable future.
I guess they would be a fit for Robertson, though...the back end
of their bullpen wasn't very good in 2014. And if they trade a
young starter or two for a shortstop, I guess signing a starter
(probably Liriano or Santana) could make a lot of sense.
Two years, $21 million for Cuddyer, by the way.
Administrative question: do we want to continue to talk about
transactions for other teams in the Hot Stove topic, or would
people prefer to move those discussions to the Around Baseball
topic?

I would prefer that they stay here - at least the ones that
could affect who the Cubs might be interested in. There was
some talk that the Cubs might be interested in Cuddyer, so it
seems appropriate.
Of course, there have been some talk about the Cubs being
interested in just about every free agent on the market, so I
don't care much either way.

Olney says the Cubs are on Hamels' no trade list. So if the
Cubs want him, they'll probably have to pick up his 5th year
option as a condition.
That makes him significantly less appealing to me. The biggest
advantage of trading for him over signing Lester was the smaller
commitment in years. Now it's probably just a one year
difference.

All qualifying offers have been declined.
I'm assuming Cuddyer would've accepted his if the Mets hadn't
given him a 2 year offer he liked, though.
