What Ron said...I'm hoping we have enough offense elsewhere that
no one gives a damn if Martin hits .240 from the 8 hole the next
4 years. He'll take enough walks in that slot to remain somewhat
productive, and his defense will be miles better than
Castillo's...

This is from ESPN Insider and why I got confused as to what
Castro you were talking about.
Will Astros deal Castro?
On Wednesday, the Houston Astros traded for catcher Hank
Conger of the Los Angeles Angels, in a move that probably didn't
register too much on anyone's radar. However, there may well be
ripple effects of that deal that will eventually draw a lot of
notice.
It went on to say that even though the Astros are saying Castro
is still their #1 catcher, most experts think he's trade bait.
The Cubs are mentioned as a potential trade partner. So there.

And the reason that they may trade Castro? Because Conger is
reputed to be a better pitch framer. Thought that was
interesting.

If the standard estimates of the value of pitch framing are
correct, MLB's umpires should be very ashamed of themselves, and
the Commissioner's Office should be pushing hard to automate the
calling of balls and strikes.

According to Joel Sherman, Jeremy Hellickson is likely to be
traded to an unknown NL team this week. Not sure the Cubs
should have any interest, though...he seems to be just another
guy to throw into the competition for the 5th starter spot.
I wonder if Russell Martin could sign during the GM meetings.
There are multiple teams that are motivated to get a deal done
quickly, and he doesn't have to wait for other catchers to go
off the market to gain leverage. There really doesn't seem to
be any reason for him to drag this out. In fact, the only way
he is going to lose any leverage this offseason is if interested
teams start spending their money on other things--so it seems
like he should be motivated to get things done before the winter
meetings at the very least.

Good points, br. Would be kind of nice to have him decide, so
that the four teams in the mix can move on accordingly. Wife
and family may also appreciate knowing sooner rather than later.
I imagine agents always figure that when teams want a guy,
they'll bid up later, whereas they'll rarely reduce their
offers.
To some degree, Hoyer might almost benefit if Martin drags it
out. Perhaps one or more of the competitors will sign somebody
else and drop out? Beats me, but maybe Pirates can afford only
one between Liriano and Martin, for example?
In past, the Dec 6 (or whatever) deadline for offering arb
strongly motivated teams to NOT sign guys before then; why lose
a draft pick unnecessarily? That's no longer a delaying factor.

Rays are having MLB investigate the Cubs for tampering.
Hellickson is likely not headed to the Cubs.
