It's being reported that Manny is not in the running for hitting
coach. The Cubs apparently were not surprised by Mueller's
decision and have a short list. It is not clear whether he
could end up as an assistant (if he decides to retire as a
player).

I would hope not.

Actually I hear the fewer/less error all the time. Less is
volume, fewer is numbers, with a few exceptions.

What if one is describing the volume of something using numbers?

Normally you go with fewer. As in I have fewer than 40 gallons
of gas. However, that's less gas than when I started the trip.

Sorry, Curt, if you say you have "40 gallons of gas," you are
talking about a volume of gas, not a quantity, and when you talk
about volume, you use "less than," and not "fewer than."
You have "less than a gallon of milk," not "fewer than one
gallon of milk." You have "less than two gallons of milk," "not
fewer than two gallons of milk." And you have "less than 40
gallons of gas," and unless you want to contort things you do
not have "fewer than 40 gallons of gas." (Granted, if you are
saying you have a known number of gallons of gas, and that it is
"fewer than 40 gallons," that would be grammatically correct,
but you really have to contort things for that. If you are
simply saying you know that you have some quantity which is
short of 40 gallons, the correct wording is "less than 40
gallons.") This is not really even open to question.

Shadev Sharma tweeted that John Mallee, Houston's hitting coach,
is the lead candidate to replace Mueller. He worked with Hyde
for the Marlins. Sharma also tweeted that Hyde helped pick a
bunch of the minor League roving instructors as well.

Success of the freaking Cards and Giants underscores the
mountain to climb the Cubs have in front of them.
Clearly, there is regular season baseball and there is playoff
baseball...and they must be EXTREMELY different.
Matt Adams (who looks awful vs normal lefties) goes deep off
Kershaw in the KEY, 7th-inning situation. WTF? Nats offense
scores ONE run in EIGHTEEN innings vs the Giants?
Positive expectancy (e.g. confidence) must count for SO much
when the heat is on. Cards and Giants have every reason to
expect a positive outcome...and it usually follows, despite the
odds relative to the individual match ups.
On the other hand, our Cubs - and Cub fans - have become SO
accustomed to negative outcomes...it will, seemingly, be VERY
hard for Cubs (and Cub fans) to overcome that.
For the above reasons, I'm VERY glad Theo and the FO intends to
bring in leaders who have been there and tasted playoff success.
The mountain would likely be just too high without such guys!
