Another journalistic brainiac: "Richard Griffin of the Toronto
Star writes that although the team could choose to re-sign Casey
Janssen, they'd be better off letting the free agent find
employment elsewhere: "Janssen has led the Jays in saves each of
the past three seasons, and if they were to re-sign him it would
be as a closer, likely for another three years. That's a long
time for the same closer."
Griffin points out that the St. Louis Cardinals have had five
different closers over the past five seasons, and that has
worked out just fine for the franchise. That's why he thinks
finding a replacement for Janssen shouldn't be something the
Jays lose any sleep over. "
Yeah, the Yankees switched every year, too...oh, wait.

This is an intriguing quote. It's from either Theo or Jed
(Patrick Mooney doesn't indicate which). It addresses something
Reb said recently about the need to limit how many big strikeout
guys end up in the lineup.
“When it comes to on-base ability and when it comes to contact,
we have a lot of work to do,” Epstein said. “We can’t assume
because we know how much we’re going to emphasize it — and how
hard we’re going to work — that our players will show some
improvement over the coming years.
“We’re also realistic. To a certain extent, those traits are
more innate than learned.”

This seems to hint at the liklihood of trading one (or more) of
the highly regarded young players who don't fit the profile.
Rizzo and Soler would presumably be safe. Bryant too, given his
ability to get on base, maturity and potential for leadership.
Russell and Schwarber appear to match what the Cubs are looking
for going forward. Castro, Baez and Alcantara really don't fit
this profile, so the question is how many of them, and which
ones, are likely to remain Cubs in the coming years?

If none of the hitting prospects wash out, it is extremely
likely that one or more will be traded, if for no other reason
that they will probably need pitching more than hitting at that
point. But I hope that they don't trade any of them before they
determine which will be the ones that wash out, and which ones
improve enough to be substantial assets to the team.
Certainly, no one that strikes out at a 44% will make a very
good MLB player. But innate or not, most players DO improve
over their rookie year, and hitters with substantial power can
be stars even with a high strike out rate.
Stanton has yet to strike out at a rate lower than 31%. Yet
some people think he is fairly good.

The issue isn't one or two guys who are huge K guys. Everybody
knows a player can be productive as a high K guy these days.
The issue is whether at some point in a lineup` too many of
these guys--in the aggregate--become counter-productive for the
overall offensive profile.
Don't know the answer to that but I suspect it could be
counter-productive at some point.

I agree that everyone in the line up should not be high
strikeout hitters. Especially if they are low OBA, low BA
hitters. And I suspect that these will be weeded out as time
goes on.
I just hope they are not weeded out until we have a better idea
who are weeds and who are not. Basing conclusions on 200 MLB at
bats is a dangerous idea.
