Though I know some have already written off Olt and concluded he
should not be part of the team's plans for 2015 or beyond, I
wonder whether the front office might conclude differently.
While Olt was without question terrible before he was sent down
to Iowa in mid-season, and his overall numbers were very bad,
his performance after he was called back up in September was not
bad at all:
.263/.370/.368/.738, with 16 K in 46 PA. Considering that his
September OPS of .738 was without him hitting a single HR, and
that he is someone who has always hit for power and is still
expected to hit for power, his September OPS is likely lower
than what should be expected from him.
I have never been a big fan of Olt, and still am not, but I
wouldn't be surprised to see Olt start at 3B for the Cubs in
April, with Bryant in LF, unless the front office is able to
move Olt for something seriously attractive before the season
starts, and until he has a major league track record of success
longer than one September, getting something seriously
attractive for him this off season would not seem likely.

While I've really liked our execution of the Plan over the past
three years (e.g. blow the org. up, stay away from expensive FA
while in building the infrastructure/foundation mode, scouting
and development to have guys who, ultimately, will be able to
better control the strike zone both hitters and pitchers etc.),
I've been really impressed with what our pro scouts/FO have
accomplished):
* trades for core pieces - Rizzo and Arrietta
* sign-and-flip guys who provided other hopefully good players -
e.g. Hammels and Feldman...returning guys like Hendricks,
Ramirez, Grimm, Edwards
* scouting and finding very useful players off the scrap heap -
e.g. Rondon, Valbuena and Coughlin
It will take a while before we know what we have with players
this FO has drafted, but hopefully next year Bryant will help
establish that the FO is doing very well there, too.

I'll add that this FO has made mistakes (e.g. Edwin) and will
continue to make some mistakes as leading a MLB franchise is a
very inexact science. However, the plusses GREATLY outweigh the
minuses so far, provided one shares the long-term time horizon.
I've had the long-term timeline in mind since, for SO long, the
Cubs organization was a complete mess in desperate need of an
overhaul...which it's certainly gotten!
