Yeah, those three are three very different situations. Heyward
has been in decline, and a .737 OPS guy in LF isn't necessarily
somebody you spend the moon to get. But, if they scout him very
favorably, this could be a perfect price-available opportunity
when he's coming off a couple of .700's years and is expiring.
But, not going to pay a ton for a guy who might give me a .737
OPS, and then leave; or for a guy who might be playing behind
Bryant and Soler anyway, if Bryant needs to move out to left.
Would depend on management thinking.
Span is at a whole different level. A speed guy in his 30's,
this was his first year in five above .738 OPS, and only his
second above .708. So not motivated to pay a very good prospect
and pay a bunch of millions for one year of a guy who might not
be very good offensively.

I think they are, yes. I think going after a guy like Russell
Martin, and paying him a year longer than you think he'll
contribute, I think they're in that Nowacrat mindset. Same for
Lester, I think they'll be willing to give him more years than
they really expect him to be good.
That's spending-Nowacrat, which costs $$ but not talent.
But I think they would also be willing to trade one of their
good-but-not-premium prospects. Not necessarily for an old
short-term guy, or a guy who's one-year max. But for somebody
who they think might be a good contributor for several years?
Maybe. Even if they don't necessarily have club control for
all of them, I think that's very plausible to trade a valuable
prospect for a valuable major leaguer, who might extend and be
valuable for multiple years.
Alcantara, Almora, Pierce Johnson, Underwood, McKinney, I
wouldn't think guys like that would be off the table, depending
on the player.

I think I like him more than most but Heyward could be a legit
bust out guy next year. He was hurt by is horrible start. In
the second half he had a .766 OPS. Even if the power doesn't
come back .350-.360 OBP with low K's and plus defense would be
useful. I wouldn't trade the tippy top guys for him, but
anybody mentioned would be.
The Cubs have plenty of money to sign anybody that they want, so
I don't think it is impossible that they could lock up somebody
that they trade for.
Monterro might interest me more than Martin at catcher.

I know expectations are high for the near future but also glad
to see that expectations seem pretty high around here for the
2015 club.
Sick and tired of thinking about draft position before end of
the season.

FWIW 2013 Giants won 76 games--only three more than 2014 Cubs.
Cubs in 2015!

I'm with you, CBJ, on Heyward. He seems to check a lot of boxes
(lefty, plate discipline, plus-defender, fast--stole 20 bases in
20 attempts last year). Could he play center field? He's a
really big dude, so maybe not (just checked, he's even bigger
than I thought: listed at 6'5" 245 lbs).
