Gaining Maddon and dropping Renteria is business as usual in the
sports world. Renteria will be ok financially I'm pretty sure .

Well, I'm not saying two 6-12 prospects go in one deal for a 1
year guy...just that there are scenarios this year where it
might make sense to make them available. Maybe Vogelbach goes
with Strop (or another expendable reliever) for a one year
outfielder. Maybe there's an opportunity for a package deal
(Heyward/Minor?) that makes sense. Or maybe a #2/#3 starting
pitcher (Tyson Ross? Derek Holland? Gio Gonzalez? Just throwing
out random names) unexpectedly becomes available for less than
elite prospects.
I'm just saying I don't think those guys are off limits like
they have been the last three years. We're past the point where
keeping all prospects is the only priority, because winning
teams sometimes trade prospects for players that will help them
this year.

What sort of track record did Theo have with the Red Sox in
trading meaningful prospects?

Will not be terribly surprised if a prospect(s) traded but will
be surprised if exchanged for a one-year rental.
Think Theo/hoyer could do that at trade deadline next summer if
Cubs are contenders but not this off-season.
Trading prospect for a guy with a few years control, sure, but
can't see for a one-year rental.

Well, I disagree with the position that one year guys are
clearly not worth it.
We'll see. I think Zobrist almost definitely changes teams this
offseason, and it's 50/50 that at least one of Span/Heyward is
traded...so we'll probably have pretty good context for
evaluating what the Cubs should've been willing to give up by
Spring Training.

Not sure I agree with not trading a good package for an
expiring, depending on what management thinks about the guy.
Players often resign if in a good place, given a good offer, and
if they feel like they're treated well. Cardinals got McGwire
and Edmonds and Rolen, and resigned them all at decent price.

An established contender may do that, sure.
So, back to my original question: cubs now in nowacrat mode?
Interesting that some here think that.

OK, World Series is over.
Let's have that Maddon announcement first thing in the morning.

I guess I would disagree that trading for Heyward is a pure
nowacrat move. Yes, they'd have to sign him. He is also going
to play the majority of next year at 25 and has put up fWARs of
4.6, 2.0, 6.3, 3.4, 5.1. He's 25, left handed hitting, corner
OF, plus defense. The only thing he is lacking is plus power
and that may come. That buildandnowacrat move if there ever was
one.
Span and Zobrist would be cost dependent for me.
