Wow wow wow on the Maddon thing. Weird having it not only
happen at all, but having it all happen so fast. Mr. Maddon,
you've got a chance to make some history!
I hope his management skills, communications skills, and
teaching skills are effective.

One of the articles said that would make it 5 managers in 6
years. Let's hope that we're now set at manager for a very long
time. Now let's add some players.

By top prospect, I mean top 5-7 in the system (plus Baez and
Alcantara). All three outfielders are good but not great
players, and they're all free agents next year. There's only so
much a team can get for one year of a non-star. Also, I would
expect the Nationals and Braves to want something that helps at
the major league level now as part of the deal (I mentioned
Strop earlier as an example as someone who would provide
significant value for either team).

I don't think there's any realistic scenario where this would be
worthwhile. Upton has nothing left. Even if they also took
back Edwin Jackson, I don't think it's worthwhile.
I get the impression from Atlanta media (talk radio and beat
writers) that the Braves have soured somewhat on Heyward over
the last year. They also don't seem to want to deal Gattis, but
they're committed to Bethancourt at catcher and Freeman at
first--that leaves corner outfield as his only realistic
position. So Heyward's price might be lower than you'd think.

Each of these guys is a pending free agent after 2015. Doesn't
seem like Theo/Hoyer style to give up quality, non-fringy guys
for a guy with one-year of control.
Or, are Cubs now in true Nowacrat posture?

Heyward is 25. He maybe a free agent, but he isn't a pure
nowacrat move. If the Braves want to be idiots and give him
away, more power to them.

But like always, there's a lot of room between "true Nowacrat"
and the strict rebuilding we've seen over the last 3 years.
Yeah, they won't be going all-in this offseason. But I think
we're at the point where they'd be perfectly willing to deal
second/third tier guys like Vogelbach and McKinney if it got
them someone who would really improve their chances in 2015.
Any of those outfielders would really make the team better next
year.
The front office has said they're planning on winning the NL
Central title next year, and they're making a huge statement by
bringing in Maddon. They're going to put a competitive team on
the field next year, and that might cost a prospect or two in
the 6-12 range.

Wow, maybe two guys in 6-12 prospect range for a one-year rental
(in a top farm system too)?
To me, that's a true Nowacrat move---kind of thing you see at
trade deadline.
Think you have to work out an extension for that guy to do that.
