Why not just sign Craig? He can't be making much money in
academia, and he has to be desperate to get out of North Dakota.

Valaika, Kalish, and Vitters assigned to Iowa and are no longer
on the 40 man.
James McDonald also passed through waivers and is a free agent.
40 man down to 37, although Ruggiano and Sweeney are on the 60
day DL...so that'll take it back to 39 when they're activated.

I've lost track. Is Fujukawa still on it? I assume that Wada
is.

Fujikawa is still on it--they hold an option on him (same as
Wada), so he's still there until they decline it.
Carlos Villanueva is still on the 40 man too, but he'll be
automatically removed in the next few days since he's a free
agent.

Guessing that Baker will be nontendered when time comes for
that.
So, roster will be at 36.
Then, have to add Edwards for Rule 5---and perhaps expose all
other eligibles.
Potential $10-11 in payroll savings and two roster spots if Wood
is non-tendered and Wada option declined.
If righty OF signed/acquired, Ruggiano becomes non-tender
candidate.
Joe Ortiz? Could come and go during off-season.
What's to be added? Two starting pitchers, maybe lefty
reliever, righty OFer, catcher to replace Baker.
Off-season trade candidates? Lake, E. Jackson, Olt, Parker,
Schlitter, who else?

Maddon.

I'd guess they're more interested in a LH outfielder who can hit
at the top of the order and play CF if necessary. I bet they'll
try to trade for Span or Zobrist for that spot (I know the
general consensus on this board is that Span is definitely
sticking with the Nationals, but I've read on Nationals
blogs/forums that he could be dealt after his option is picked
up). Either of those guys check multiple boxes: leaders, get on
base, good defenders, and shouldn't cost top prospects in a
trade. Heyward would probably fit here too.
With all the Russell Martin talk, I'd expect them to try to
replace both catchers. I wouldn't be surprised to see Miguel
Montero become the primary target. I know Martin has the
leadership pedigree, but both are excellent defenders, and
Steamer projections have them as almost identical hitters next
year. If the Diamondbacks really are looking to slash payroll
this offseason, Montero shouldn't cost much in a trade.
Other trade candidates: Szczur, Wood, Castillo. Also, Strop is
a guy who I think could be a trade candidate specifically if the
Nationals (or Braves) decide they would be willing to deal Span
(or Heyward). He'd have a lot of value to a team that is trying
to contend now, but his history of control problems make me
think that this front office would actively explore
opportunities to sell high.
Based on arbitration estimates given by MLB Trade Rumors, the
Cubs payroll sits at about $56-57 million right now (this is
assuming all players are tendered, Wada's and Fujikawa's options
are declined, Turner's option is picked up, and open spots on
the bench/bullpen are filled by minimum salary guys).
Non-tender (or trade) Wood, Baker, and Ruggiano, and they're a
little under $50 million. So it seems like they could have up
to $50-60 million to spend this offseason. They have the
flexibility to do a lot.
