Peavy just doesn't impress me. I know he's looked good since
coming over to the Giants but his stuff looks spent to me. I'd
rather bring Hammel back than sign Peavy.

Just say no to Peavy.
Maybe on Hammel depending on the cost and what other guys are
asking for.
Brett Anderson on a 1 year deal would be really interesting.

Brett Anderson isn't worth anything more than a minor league
contract. He just can't stay healthy.

Health would be a huge risk with him, but a low base salary with
incentives would be fair. You could really back into a TORP
with him for a low cost, even though he likely spends a fair
amount of time on the DL.

All depends on price, of course.
But I'm OK with Peavy, with the second guy, just like I'm OK
with lots of others, if the prices makes sense. Hoyer needs to
know what he can afford.
Peavy has been a perfectly 100 ERA+ guy for two years straight,
and he racked up 200 innings. If you can get 200 innings of 100
ERA+ from your 4th starter, that's not a problem. I'm not
really expecting much more than that from the second veteran
that Theo wants. Obviously Peavy is old, and he's already
optimized his talents, so not somebody where Bosio would get
more out of him.
Hammel is only a year younger than Peavy. Weird, I'd have
instinctively thought several years younger. Hammel had a 109
ERA+ this year, and a lot worse 2013. I think he, too, would be
fine as a #4. But not sure he's all that much safer or younger.
(Or cheaper?)
Francisco Liriano just turned 31 this week, a year younger than
Hammel. He's got good stuff, I wonder how much interest the
Cubs would have in him. Having a lefty with more stuff than
Wood might not hurt. He was a guy I thought the Cubs might
pursue two years ago, when they added Feldman/Baker/Villanueva.
He's always had really good stuff; he might be a guy where Bosio
might think he could tap in and somehow get the good Liriano
more consistently, he'd be really good. Might be a lot more
expensive than Hammel or Peavy, though.
Brett Anderson would be interesting. What's his health and
velocity status these days?
Peavy's age would seem to make him the most unlikely. But one
factor is that Hoyer has talked about wanting leadership. Peavy
has lots of personality, he's a good talker, and he's a very
positive, enthusiastic guy who likes people. Lots of
experience, both on back-to-back world Series teams, and has
experienced both individual highs (Cy Young, all-star games) and
some lows (injuries, bad years, etc.) Not sure that Liriano has
that kind of personality or clubhouse presence.

lots of pitches in order to tire the starter and get to the
bullpen seems obsolete. What's the point in doing that when
league-wide, relievers pitch better than starters? "
In this interesting interview with Joe Maddon on Fagraphs, he
pretty much sounds like you are in his head (Craig for
manager!): "“There are a lot of ways to look at how you might
augment your offense, but it can’t just be nine guys working a
pitching staff over,” said Maddon. “If your goal is to get a
starter out of a game, that might be the last thing you want to
do...“We might possibly need to see a trend away from seeing
pitches,” suggested Maddon."
