That was certainly my first thought/fantasy.
Any feeling sorry for Dick Renteria baffles me. If, as an
organization, you get the opportunity to add an executive-level
talent like Joe Maddon, you don't let someone like Renteria keep
you from getting him.
You either pay Renteria to go away or you reassign him within
your organization as a reward for keeping the manager's chair
warm for a year.
I love the idea of hiring Maddon. If he wants to bring in a
whole new coaching staff, I love that idea, too. Let him clean
house, even if it means losing Chris Bosio (which I doubt he
would want to do).
Maddon isn't perfect. He'll run out a lineup that'll make you
think he's sniffing glue on some days. Other times, his bullpen
management will leave you shaking your head and fist. He's a
little like Don Zimmer in going with his instincts sometimes.
He uses shifts to extremes. He's a free thinker and a big
personality.
I am a Maddon fan. I am NOT a Renteria fan.
I thought Renteria was over his head when it came to in-game
managing and handling a pitching staff, especially handling of
the bullpen early in the year. He did seem to get better as the
year went on but he can't hold a candle to Maddon.

I'm not feeling sorry for Renteria but I still don't think this
is fair to him. The guy took over a rebuilding club and Theo
looks like he will be pulling the plug on him after just one
year-- that's not enough of a sample size to make a judgement on
a guy as a manager.

I don't think it's about pulling the plug on Renterria. It's
about an upgrade. That's not a judgement of Renterria's
abilities as much as it is a compliment to Maddon's.
IF ANY OF THIS HAPPENS, that is.

I'm not sure it would carry over or represents any great
cleverness, but one thing I appreciated about Renteria in game
was the simplicity of his pen management. For the most part he
didn't do much at all.
Mostly clean, 1-inning, RHP usage, very simple.
Didn't often over-manage by doing lefty match ups and lots of
mid-inning switches.

FWIW the only current manager older than Joe Maddon is Terry
Collins.
Not a spring chicken for the rebuild.

In this day and age, I wouldn't think Maddon being 60 would be
much of a concern assuming that his age doesn't keep him from
connecting with this players. I have not heard anything to
suggest that this has been a problem for him.

The concept of taking lots of pitches in order to tire the
starter and get to the bullpen seems obsolete. What's the point
in doing that when league-wide, relievers pitch better than
starters?
Kansas City highlights that; do you want to be facing Jeremy
Guthrie, or their relievers? Same with Cubs: are opponents
really wanting to get from Jackson/Hendricks/Wood/Harrel type
starters to Strop, Ramirez, Grimm, and Rondon?
Take pitches that you can't drive, and take pitches if it can
help get you on base via walk. But for most teams, don't take
pitches in order to get to the bullpen sooner.
