Dusty's management of the Cubs is old news and, like many other
things, best forgotten. But while it's possible too much was
made of his "clogging the bases" comment, it reflected an
extremely old school approach to the game. Whatever his
positive qualities had been as a manager, he had become
something of a dinosaur by the time he managed the Cubs. And his
abuse of Wood and Prior (especially in games in which there was
no point in leaving them in) remains inexcusable to me.

Piniella was actually pretty good with the Cubs until they got
embarrassed in the 2008 Division Series. After that, he just
seemed like he was just going through the motions.
There wasn't nearly as much in-depth baseball analysis on the
internet back when Dusty was hired (and there was even less when
Baylor was hired). But there were a few sources--I believe ESPN
had Rob Neyer writing for them, and Baseball Prospectus'
archives go back to 1996. Even back then, I remember negative
evaluations of those guys being too old school.
I trust Maddon more than I trust them because everyone seems to
like him. Guys like Harold Reynolds and Joe Morgan talk about
how well he relates to players. Stat guys talk about how
open-minded he is in trying new things, and how strong he is
strategically (especially in managing the bullpen). Plus, as
far as I can tell, the fans in Tampa still like him. Fan bases
almost never like their team's manager--so he must be doing
something right.

Matheny tragically killed when hit by blimp. Maddon joins the
Cardinals.

I'm not sure why Maddon would want to go there. He's used to
working for one of the best GMs in baseball. Safe to say that
would not be the case in Philly.

His record would still be bad, but it would likely be less bad
than what Sandberg will do. I don't have stats to back me up,
but I'd guess Maddon is worth somewhere between 1-5 wins for a
team that he manages. When you get close to or above 90 wins
the value of those increases greatly.

My point was, Ron, is managers and head coaches can't make
chicken salad out of horseshit. Sometimes the guys that get
credit just knew what program to jump to. Saban left LSU for
the pros and when he realized that wasn't going to work for him,
he took Alabama. Pinella took the Cubs when he saw that they
were on the temporary rise. If the Cubs had been in the same
shape as the current Phillies, I doubt he would have done it. I
doubt Maddon would be interested in the Phillies or Texas or San
Diego or Arizona.
