Agree with Ron that, unless Theo addresses the Maddon rumors in
short order, the silence will be deafening.
Let's see if Renteria at least gets the dreaded vote of
confidence.

Is Maddon actually a good manager?
As Dave alluded to, over the last 15 years we've had managers
with 7 manager-of-year trophies (Baylor 1, Dusty 3, and Piniella
3). Each of those guys had successful teams and got external
recognition before joining Cubs. But none of those three
actually proved to be a good manager for the Cubs.
Is Maddon different, a guy who's actually good and will still be
good in a different landscape with a different team?

We haven't really talked that much about the job Renteria did
this past season, so if nothing else, maybe this is a good time
to take stock with the job he's doing thus far.
After one season, I've been pretty pleased with him. The young
players are improving. The effort on the field has been much
better than it's been in a long time. The team played pretty
respectably during the second half of the season, in spite of
all of the trades we made. It certainly would have been easy
for this team to fold down the stretch after losing Samardzija
and Hammel like we've done in the past few seasons, but we
actually seemed to do better without them.
I think it's fair to say from a gazillion miles away that the
team has bought into Renteria. I wouldn't be in any hurry to
replace him barring special circumstances.
Of course, having a chance to hire Joe Maddon counts as being a
special circumstance.

Eric Hinske reportedly told the Yankees he wasn't interested in
being considered as their new hitting coach because he'd rather
stay with the Cubs as their assistant hitting coach.

Which raises the question of what kind of flexibility Maddon
would have with naming his coaching staff? Seems certain Bosio
will stay no matter what. Having just hired Mallee away from the
Astros, I would expect his job to be safe - with Hinske
presumably staying on as well?

I've been really happy with Renteria. I don't think any manager
will be perfect in game, but he didn't do a lot of really stupid
things. The players seemed to respond well to him. I would
only think about getting rid of him for Black or Maddon at this
point.
I would put Maddon on a much different level of manager than
Baylor and Dusty. Dusty seems to be more of a people manager
than an in game guy. Maddon is amazing at both. I didn't
follow the Cubs close enough during the Pinella years to say
what kind of a manager he was, but I still don't think he is on
Maddon's level at both managing people and in game strategy.

Dusty Baker's calling card was that he was a people person.
IMO his in game management was nowhere near as bad as some here
would lead you to believe though.
As far as Maddon goes im impartial.
If he has talent he will win. If he dont he wont.
No different than any other manager who has ever lived.
If infield shifts are your thing he's your man though.

I really want to blame Prior and Wood on his handling of them,
but Prior had so many freak injuries that was his likely
downfall. He abused both of them though and that is why I
dislike him to this day.
