Telander either isn't all that bright or he's in competition
with Wittenmyer.

Think that Sun-Times guys haven't heard yet that Trib sold the
Cubs. Guessing Cubs coverage will calm once they dig into that.

I like what's going on with the talent. But, Telander is
correct, this is year 5, and by Theo's comments we're still a
ways off.
*This year we'll try to win the division (that's progress to at
least be talking about trying).
*I think his comments suggest they do have at least the concept
of being willing to spend some and to break into the top-20 in
spending, if that might perhaps help them try to win more.
*In past, Theo has often talked about how the baseball plan and
the revenue plans were going to come together and sync well in
terms of timeline. So, no actual building stuff yet, and the TV
deal is 2019, right? So, is it going to be 2019 before
above-average spending becomes part of the program?
Maybe so. If the prospects develop well, maybe we'll win a ton
without breaking into the top-20 or top-15 in spending. We
don't need to be a top-15 spender to potentially win, given how
cheap the prospects are. Maybe the "sync" is that if the
prospects work out and make the Cubs a juggernaut, the "sync"
will have the money coming in by the time they need big bucks to
keep the juggernaut together.

the groundbreaking was today for the renovation, and the whole
outfield wall is gone in anticipation of building out the
bleachers to support the video board. So, shouldn't those
signs/boards provide a spike in revenue? And the WGN portion of
the TV deal expired, so the cubs are currently negotiating a
mini-tv deal, which may also increase revenue in the near-term.
So, that is at least somewhat in sync with the player
development stuff, right? (and if Craig was responding to the
Telander piece...well, I refuse to read Telander so I apologize
if I am missing the point).

It is year 5 of ownership, but only year 3 of the rebuild. The
first two years were with the same old approach Telander would
seem to like to see used now -- trying to win every season
without a true rebuild.
Telander seemed to be "correct" about little more than spelling
the team's name, management and ownership right.

It's Theo's regime that Telander was questioning and he's been
here three years.

The TV deal is only one part, and presumably the last part, of
the business plan. By next season they will have increased
bleacher seating, and two or three new jumbotrons that will be
generating additional income. That is in addition to the one
they have already put in right field. And according to the
write up, the new radio contract is one of the most lucrative in
the MLB. In addition, they have added new expensive seating
just past each dugout that I believe is sold by open bid, which
is likely to become extremely expensive if the Cubs actually
begin to compete for the division pennant, even if they only
come close.

Thanks shasson and DaveP. So a lot of the building stuff and
the new revenues will already be in place next year? That's
nice, and if so does indeed sync pretty well then.
Being able to spend heavy on some FA's will provide a new
opportunity for improvement. A team gets built one guy at a
time, so adding one or two more good players would make a big
difference.
Growing up I never expected the Cubs to be big spenders. I
never thought they were entitled to use free agency as a real
tool.
I wanted them to be rich enough to keep whatever talent they'd
developed, such that if they scouted/developed well enough to
produce championship-quality young talent, that they'd be able
to keep them.
I think that may be coming true.
