The thing that just drives me nuts about the D is they will get
3rd and long and give it up. I don't see that changing this
year. How many 20+ plays did Rex Grossman have in a row last
night? It was 4 or 5. Sure you can say the talent wasn't out
there, but that is in part scheme and coaching.

would mean middle ranking, let's say middle to upper teens
(ranking). If this D ended up being ranked 15th in the league I
would say they've improved "significantly". If they can do that,
I see this team easily being a playoff team. This offense is top
five (stay healthy could be top in the NFC), but we need at
least a semi decent D to get anywhere.

I would also consider middle of the pack as significant

Scheme can only do so much on 3rd down. A good pass rush helps
as do DBs and LBers that can stay with receivers.
Last night not only was our regular talent missing but I'd bet
they were not exactly showing off the schemes they will be using
during the season.

One of the major goals of preseason is keep your team off IR.
We lost the TE Zach Miller and although he was looking like a
solid contributor he wasn't a starter. We'll see what happens
with Marques Wilson...crossing my fingers that they can keep him
on the roster or at worse put him on the special IR list.
Defensively, we'll have to see how the middle holds up. Paea
and Ratliff were in there last year when our defense was a sieve
so I don't know how much better they will be. We do have the 2
rookies to keep them fresher. And I haven't seen enough of DJ
Williams to feel confident in him - I just know he's an
improvement over Bostic. And Conte is coming off a tough season
and Mundy is new to the team.
On the outside, I'm OK with Tillman, Jennings, and Fuller all
our DEs, and Briggs and even McClellan figuring he will be
subbed out half the time.

While everybody wants to lock up a sure thing and wait till the
end for their predictions. That wasn't my point. The point was
that the first half of the season contains the roadies and the
tougher matchups. If we get through that with flying colors and
the defense holds I expect the 2nd half to be a lock barring key
injuries. We don't have the quality depth to sustain major
injuries because Angiblow left the cupboard bare

The only problem I have with what you said is that while I agree
with the Bears being top 5 offense last year, we are talking
about last year. This is this year. Teams catch up and catch
onto what a team did last year. There is no guarantee the
offense can duplicate what it did last year.

If we are at or near 500 after the first half of the schedule
with all the away games I will be happy. Anything better then
that and I will be thrilled.

Bills will face Bears without Stephon Gilmore
Posted by Josh Alper on September 7, 2014, 12:07 PM EDT
Kelvin Benjamin, Stephon Gilmore
AP
When facing the Bears and wide receivers Brandon Marshall and
Alshon Jeffery, cornerback is not a spot where you want to be
shorthanded.
It’s a tough draw for the Bills on Sunday, then, because their
top cornerback is going to miss the game. Stephon Gilmore was
listed as questionable on Friday because of a groin injury and
he was declared inactive on Sunday morning.
That leaves the Bills with Corey Graham to start in Gilmore’s
place across from Leodis McKelvin and it also bumps Nickell
Robey, Ron Brooks and Ross Cockrell into potentially bigger
roles in the season opener.
It’s hardly an ideal way for the Bills to start a season that’s
already been plagued by stories of issues between coach Doug
Marrone and parts of the front office against the backdrop of a
coming change in ownership. They’ll need the pass rush to show
that the loss of defensive coordinator Mike Pettine wasn’t a
major one if they’re going to keep a potent Bears passing attack
from having a big day.
