I think the high cost of big ticket FA's has little to do with
baseball as much as putting butts in the seats. As some of the
younger GM's say, don't pay for past performance, yet that's
what happens. Has Pujols played in a manner that justifies his
salary? No. But I'll bet the revenue he brings in through
tickets and merchandise. There just aren't enough players who
are worth the $$$ in terms of the W's they lead to. We fans
often forget the business side of all this.

With larger sums of money teams also look at the present value
of money... if you assume that a dollar is worth 2 % per year
less as time goes forward... and your revenues are increasing...
spreading out 240 million over 10 years makes the AAV a lot
lower in real terms in years 6-10.

Unfortunately the player's performance generally declines at a
far faster rate than the value of the money the team is paying
him.

sure but like JR said you are paying for the short term need...
and amortizing the cost into the future...
using a present value calculator and assuming a 3 percent
decline in value of dollars... 24 million promised to someone 10
years from now is really only worth 17.6 million in today's
dollars...
this assumes a fairly low rate of inflation... money supply is
growing far faster then 3%

It's official--Rizzo and Sale both win the final vote
competitions. So now I won't see two Cubs play when I don't
watch the game.

Tanaka officially has tear in his ligament (assumed UCL), albeit
a small one, per Cashman. Wow.

Tanaka has a small tear in UCL, he is going to try a PRP
injection first. Tick/tock on TJS.
