That thought has crossed my mind, too, Cactus.

Why would Hendry go with less than who he thought was the best
for the job when his job is on the line this year? He'd rather
protect Sandberg's reputation than keep his job? That seems
more than a little unlikely.
If Sandberg ever has a successful managerial career, I'll be
surprised. He may eventually get hired by someone, but he'll
never end up with more than a few hundred managerial wins.

Sorry Cactus, but that's just not feasible. Hendry would go
with whoever who thought gave him the best chance to keep his
job.

Because the new owners treasure Cub history...if the season goes
poorly, br, who would you fire the HOF icon or Buffet Bob? It's
a no brainer.

If the season goes poorly, Hendry is gone no matter who his
manager is. There is no more scapegoating of managers or
coaches.
But regardless, I think it is extremely unlikely Hendry went
into this season thinking it was going to be so bad that he
needed to protect a manager (or indirectly protect himself).
This team has plenty of talent to compete in this division. I
mean, a lot has gone wrong--at least two-thirds of the hitters
in the lineup are underperforming expectations on any given day,
3/5 of the rotation has been far worse than expected...and the
Cubs are still only 2 games under .500. If Dempster had pitched
even close to as well as expected and one of Wells or Cashner
had stayed healthy, it's pretty likely the Cubs would be right
there with the Cardinals in first place.

BOSTON -- Minnesota left-hander Francisco Liriano will wait
another day to follow up his no-hitter, having his next start
pushed back because of flu symptoms and a sore throat.
The run of injuries and illness that has hurt the Twins all
season just seems to have no end.
ESPN was really looking forward to Monday night's game in
Boston, too.

The answer was firing Hendry four years ago.

If Quade was the answer, Hendry is asking dumber and dumber
questions.

Well, sure, ideally, when Andy MacPhail left, the entire front
office should have been replaced.
