[i]If Sox dump Guillen, list of potential successors is long
How about Lehigh Valley IronPigs manager Ryne Sandberg? The Cubs
passed on hiring their Hall of Famer when they stuck with Mike
Quade over the winter. Sandberg has been successful in the minor
leagues, and with a few well-chosen words White Sox fans could
embrace him, especially if he found a spot on his coaching staff
       for Carlton Fisk.

In his Sunday column, which I am not going to include a link to
(it isn't worth it), Phil Rogers speculates on Ozzie Guillen's
job security and names everybody and their brother as a possible
successor - including Ryne Sandberg. Please tell me that is not
       going to happen.

None of the teams who had a managerial opening in the offseason
were interested in Sandberg...even the Cubs only gave him a
courtesy interview. I'd be surprised if that had changed for
       the White Sox.

If it does change, and the White Sox do sign him, for the Sox it
would likely be less because they thought he was more likely
than other options to win help the team win games and develop
players, but instead to tweak the noses of Cub fans and the Cub
       organization.

It's very telling that not one other GM seriously considered
Sandberg as a major-league managerial candidate. My feelings on
Quade as a manager are still extremely mixed, but Sandberg
wasn't the answer. The answer was Joe Girardi 4 years ago when
       Tubby hired Lou instead.

How many major league jobs were open after Sandberg was passed
over? Deference to the Cubs perhaps precluded any other team
offering him a job; especially after Ryne himself said the only
job he was interested in was the Cub job. So, frankly, I don't
think getting passed over by others means diddly.

If the Cubs thought Sandberg was in any way a major league
quality manager, they would've hired him. They've always gone
after the big name/good PR choice in the past...at least with
the 3 previous managers. The fact that they didn't go with him
tells me that they see some serious question marks about his
ability to run a major league team.
If Ryne Sandberg's name was, say, Luis Salazar, he wouldn't even
be on the major league radar after 4 years of managing in the
minors, IMO. The last thing the Cubs need is to make a move
based mainly on his ability as a player.

It is entirely possible that Jim Hendry knew what the 2011 Cubs
were going to be like and did not want that blemish on Ryno's
       resume.
