3-run homer for Berkman.
I don't think anyone's ever won Comeback Player and MVP awards
in the same season.

Berkman hits one into the 2nd deck in Houston.
Looks like I way underestimated the Cardinal effect on him, and
I had him having a terrific year.

Pirates managed Clint Hurdle said Brandon Wood hasn't passed
Ronny Cedeno on the depth chart yet even though he's started
three straight games at shortstop.
"He's played three games," Hurdle said of Wood. "I'm just riding
the little hotter hand. My job is to get everything I can out of
every player on that roster. I, by no means, am finished trying
to get the best I can out of Ronny Cedeno. By no means finished.
Right now, I'm riding the hot hand. [Wood]. What I've heard,
he's dependable, so we're going to get a better look while we're
at home. And when we go on the road, Ronny is going to get some
more games." Wood has just one hit in seven at-bats in the three
games, though he also had a two-RBI double in a start at third
base prior to that. The Pirates have nothing to lose by giving
the former heralded prospect a shot.

Last May when Troy Glaus posted a .330/.408/.534 line with 6 HR
and 21 RBI, Frank Wren looked like a genius for signing a guy
with creaky knees to a cheap contract to play the least
demanding position on the field. Then he posted a brilliant
.205/.299/.299 line in the second half, and couldn't stay on the
field.
I suspect Berkman's season will eventually take a similar turn.
His knees have been just as bad, and he's playing a more
demanding position than Glaus did last year.

Leake pleads guilty to reduced charge
Associated Press
CINCINNATI -- Reds pitcher Mike Leake was sentenced to
counseling and 30 hours of community service after pleading
guilty Friday to a charge reduced from theft to unauthorized use
of property.
The 23-year-old right-hander was arrested by Cincinnati police
on April 18 after trying to leave Macy's with six T-shirts
having a total value of $59.88. He said before the Reds' game
Friday that he was trying to exchange T-shirts he'd purchased on
April 2 that were too small.
Macy's and the Hamilton County court system agreed Friday to
reduce the charge, which will be dismissed if he completes the
community service and counseling.
Cincinnati's 2009 No. 1 draft pick is 3-0 with a 4.40 ERA in
five starts, going 2-0 since his arrest.

Would anyone get jail time for stealing $60 worth of merchandise
for a non-violent offender with (I'm assuming) no criminal
record? I honestly don't know, but I hope they wouldn't...seems
like a waste of resources to stick someone in jail for a
relatively minor crime. Community service is a far more
appropriate punishment, IMO.
