Of course he would not get 20 million based upon his career
numbers. But no one is stupid enough to base an offer on career
       numbers ONLY.
It is believed by many baseball people that Samardzija's future
numbers will greatly exceed his past career numbers. And it is
the expectation of future performance that drives a contract
       offer.

more twitter stuff from cubs con (seems all to be alluding to
       Tanaka):
"Epstein: : Front office has held back funds this offseason in
case there is opportunity to get a young talent
For those asking, Epstein implied that if Cubs don't get that
young talent with the held back funds, those funds could be
       rolled over"

CBJ, I don't think Sam would be paid like a 3 WAR pitcher,
because until now he has underperformed his peripherals as a
starter, and fWAR draws heavily on those peripherals. There is
an increasing willingness to admit that some guys have a real
skill to both over and under perform peripherals. If you
consider Sam based on RA-9 WAR, the picture is very different.
Whether it's due to his underperformance or his age, Sam isn't a
$20 mil pitcher, yet. The possibility is there for $20 and lots
more, but he has 350ip as a starter now that are working against
his case. I'd offer him a deal with an AAV of $15 (which
overpays his RA-9 WAR and doesn't include any notion of the
discount normally associated with pre-FA extensions) and no more
       right now.

Is audio from the Cubs convention available yet? Live, or
recordings of last night's or recent sessions?

Not a surprise (I'm surprised an announcement was even needed),
but Renteria was quoted as confirming today that Veras will be
       the closer.

so speculating on what Sam would get on an older market is
pointless. The market now is what Tanaka is shopping in, what
Samardz would see were he free, what Kershaw just signed in, and
what Tanaka is buzzing. The market Samardz will see two winters
from now is likely to be as high or higher than it is now, which
is one reason why not extending now is his choice.

What Smardj might get two years from now was not the topic of
       discussion.
What he would get NOW was.
And he would not now get a multi-year deal at $20M per.

Can anyone identify a pitcher in recent years who has had a
career profile close to Smardj at his age who the next season
did go on and have the break out kind of ace performance season
which would actually warrant $20M a year?
