But Jes is always right and he especially loves to disagree with
me Dave. I thought you knew that?

No reason to consider yourself to be special. Jes disagrees
       with everyone.

I've seen several tweets tonight about Samardzija saying
something like "If Tanaka signs, the 'R word' [rebuilding] kind
of disintegrates." It almost sounds like he's saying it'll be
easier to get him to stick around long term if the Cubs get
       Tanaka.

And here's the actual quote, courtesy of Muskat:
       [quote author=Jeff Samardzija]
Obviously, it changes that timeline. I've mentioned my
frustration with that 'R' word [rebuilding] before. You bring
him in and that 'R' word essentially disintegrates.

This is a $20 million pitcher over the last 2 years, Tim
       Lincecum
       20-29, K% 23, BB% 10, ERA- 132, FIP- 109, xFIP- 96, SIERA 3.86,
       ERA 4.76, FIP 3.95, xFIP 3.68 fWAR 2.5
       Giants record 170-154.
       Samardzija
       17-26, K% 24.1, BB% 8.2, ERA- 103, FIP- 93, xFIP- 89, SIERA
       3.51, ERA 4.10, FIP 3.67, xFIP 3.42, fWAR 5.8
       Cubs 127-197
People need to realize that we are going to see a lot of wage
inflation that we haven't seen for a long time.

At times, yes. And at other times virtually everyone here has
posted something I have agreed with, and on which I have posted
my agreement (even the idiot otto). I neither agree with nor
disagree with any post or idea simply because of who posts it or
       who presents the idea.
As to believing Smardj would get 20M/year if he were now a FA,
who is a comparably aged pitcher, with a comparable track record
who has signed a multi year contract for $20M/year? I can't
think of any. I can't think of any who have even gotten
       15M/year.

Lincecum's track record is a bit longer than the last 2 years,
and includes a good deal more success than Smardj.
Additionally, the value of a player includes not only the
player's ability to help a team win games, but to fill seats. I
suspect there are far more fans willing to pay to see Lincecum
pitch than who are willing to pay to see Smardj pitch.

Well since Smardzija has only been starting for the last 2
years, it makes it kind of hard to compare him to starters
before that. If you want to pay more for past performance go
ahead, but it isn't always a great idea.
Zach Greinke has 7.7 fWAR over the past 2 years, 1.9 more than
Samardzjia and has a AAV of 24.5 million.

It's kind of deceptive to pick out Lincicum, a guy obviously on
the decline. There are also a lot of pitchers a lot better than
Shark making less than $20 million.

You are going to have to look at the guys that have signed in
the last year or so, because I believe we are just at the
beginning of a salary explosion. So looking at guys that signed
even 2 years ago won't be fair. Plus he asked for any examples.
