They should trade Samardzija now. The risk of injury,
ineffectiveness and teams like the Phillies, Royals and Goc
forbid the Rays falling out of races early and putting better
pitchers on the market is simply too great a g@mble.
There needs to be some sanity here, finally. Samardzija is a
malcontent and that's not going to change as the Cubs lose game
after game in the early going. He'll grow ever more frustrated
with every booted ground ball and every misplayed fly out.
Hacks like Paul Sullivan, Barry Rozner and @GDubCub will eat
that up and stoke the fires in the media, whipping the fans that
aren't going to the park into a frenzy. They can avoid that by
getting rid of him before that happens.
The Cubs should be able to get at least one Major League ready
pitcher in a Samardzija deal in addition to other pitching
prospects considering he's got two full years of control left.
I don't like taking a chance and having a line drive go off his
noggin, ending his career and leaving the Cubs holding the bag.

I don't see anything in the interview that would suggest
Samardzija is a malcontent.

The notion here is to try and get someone who can be a TOR
rotation somehow, some way. It's not going to be through FA,
that's clear - the Cubs aren't going to outbid teams for
whichever of those guys make it to FA next winter. You either
have to get one through the draft or via trade. The goal in
trading Samardzija should be to get one of those guys back, even
if he's a couple of years away. It should trump closeness to
the majors or getting multiple prospects.

I was and maybe still am all for trading Samardzija as soon as
possible but with the contracts these guys are getting this
offseason he's due to break the bank in a major way.
One would have to think he's loving the way things are
unfolding.

And we probably dont even have much help on the way as far as
'14 goes in our farm system.
One would think we'll probably see Baez and Alcantara in the
latter part of this year but if Bryant is treated the same way
Baez was we're not gonna see him and Soler and Almora arent
anywhere near ready yet.
I guess Kyle Hendricks will probably be here this year as well
but I dont think anyone expects him to be more than a back of
the rotation guy and the same can probably be said for any other
pitcher we could bring up.
Arodys Vizcaino could probably be a pretty useful bullpen arm
though.

On the contrary I think the lesson he may take is that guys
carrying draft compensation are struggling to get big deals.

There is very reason to expect any regression in his performance
in 2014 compared to 2013, unless he suffers some serious injury,
and my understanding is that he has no injury history
whatsoever, including during his time in football. So if he
starts the season strong, and performs in April and May of 2014
as he did in 2012, his trade value would likely sharply climb,
while if his performance remains unchanged, his trade value is
likely to also be relatively unchanged.
I suspect the Theocracy will hold onto him for at least the
first month of the season.

John Arguello has a blog entry up, in which he takes a crack at
explaining what he thinks the Cubs' thinking is as far as the
personnel decisions going into the 2014 season.
The Cubs are confident they have the talent to be better than
they showed last year. There were glimpses of what they could
be but they were overshadowed by long stretches of poor
fundamental play.Their focus then, hasn't been on adding talent;
it's been on better utilizing the talent they believe they
already have.

This projects Castro, Rizzo, Barney, Jackson and Samardzija
having better years (as each was seen as having a disappointing
year), along with what Arguello seems to suggest would be a
natural progression by Lake, Sweeney, Arrieta, Grimm, Strop and
Castillo. That's going to cause hoots here, but it's not a
totally unreasonable scenario, if one believes that those guys
have talent they haven't fully utilized and that the coaching
staff can help them get there.

I agree that it's reasonable, but the same people who hired
Renteria and helped him assemble a coaching staff also hired
Sveum and had input on his coaches. Let's hope they got it right
this time.
