The Cubs 17% of gross revenue was around $3.5 million, so gross
should be about $20.5 million. Deduct the Cubs' cut, their gross
is about $17 million. Then deduct the cost of food, booze,
maintenance, insurance, staff, taxes and miscellaneous expenses
like business licenses, advertising and ticket sales. If they
borrowed money to purchase or upgrade the facilities, add
       interest payments.

I'm not really sure where to put this, but Kaplan wrote a piece
on the Cubs business plan and why it may never work. I guess he
got a look at the rooftop's contract and it is very favorable to
the rooftops. The most interesting piece is that some of the
Rickett's are getting tired of the stalled renovation and would
be willing to move. Tom is apparently against this. It might
be time for papa Joe to flex some muscle and get his son in
       line.

Even the threat of a relocation can have a profound tonic
effect. Set up the meetings, get the blueprints drawn up, see
what the suburbanites are willing to offer.
There's also Tony Rezko's old railroad land in the South Loop,
       of course.

That's how I see it too. Somewhere in between his 2012 and
2013. 3.70-4.00 is a good pitcher, pretty useful, but not an
       annual all-star.
The cutter is a very effective pitch.
Blue, from a saber perspective, is it possible that a lot of
Wood's "fly balls" are cutter-contact that aren't really that
much more dangerous than a popup? There is a continuum of air
contact from pop to long HR; might not many of his "fly balls"
off cutters be skewed toward the "pop" end of the continuum, not
very dangerous, rather than the "HR" end? Such that his low
       HR/FB rate isn't just luck?

I watched most of his starts and when he is locating it well it
induces a lot of weak pop ups and fly ball outs. If it gets
over the plate it gets hit very hard. Another thing that went
well for him last year was he stranded 77% of his base runners,
that isn't going to happen very often.
The other thing that concerns me is his fastball average went
from 89 to 88 from 2012 to 2013. It might just be a year to
year variance or it could become a trend. The cutter is
basically just a harder slider, unless you Riveria and it is
your natural break. From his current pitch mix that is just
over 45% of his pitches and that will put a lot of stress on his
arm. I like him, I'm just not sold enough on him to give him a
big contract or a ton of years.

While this is true, it rarely reaches the point of being a
problem. Usually people read way too far into ERA, W, and WHIP.
I wish we could say the opposite (that people read too far into
advanced metrics), because we would have much more meaningful
conversations about baseball on the whole if that were the case.

Interesting transcript of an interview with Samardzija.
  HTML http://chicagocubsonline.com/archives/2014/01/jeff-samardzija-talks-cubs-future-score.php#.UuVEfhDna00
Samardzija seems to have his own very definite expectations of
what the Cubs should be doing, as far as spending money to bring
in veteran players here and now, and it appears to be very
different from Theo's intentions. To the extent that this is a
significant obstacle to getting a deal done, I'd say he's
probably a goner no later than July (assuming he performs well
enough in the first half to warrant a strong return). I can't
really tell from his comments whether he expects to be paid like
an Ace in any contract or not, but he certainly expects to
become an Ace, even though his actual performance is quite a
ways from there based on last season.
