Losing a second round pick doesn't bug me. A strong major
league starter is worth a lot more to me.
Also, let's say a few things go right for the Cubs this year and
they finish with only the 11th or 12th worst record in baseball.
They'll still need to add a good pitcher or two next offseason,
and at that point they'd be giving up a first round pick.
They're better off giving up a second round pick now than a
first round pick in a year.

If you can sign Jimenez for $36 for 3 years (which I doubt) you
can certainly flip him in July for a better prospect package
than what you'll get in a 2nd round pick. That may be the most
disturbing thing about this comatose offseason - whatever
positives have come for the organization since the ownership
change have mostly come via the salary dumps and the guys Theo
has gotten back. This season we don't even have that, though
Samardzija will likely be gone either now or in July. But not
adding any flippable FAs would be a major setback.
Let's be clear - Jimenez isn't going to make the Cubs a .500
team. He wouldn't even make them a 70-win team, most likely.
But the team as currently structured is basically what the team
was after the fire sale the last two seasons, except it's the
team you'll be playing with for the full season. The window to
compete during Shark's contract and probably his best years is
effectively closed - the only path that makes sense now is that
rebuild from the rebuild, trade him for the best pitching
prospect you can get either now or in July, and sign at least
one marketable 2nd-tier FA to flip in July. In that sense
Jimenez could make sense if you could get him cheap enough, but
I still think he gets $15 million per and 4 years from somebody.

I think we may have a 70-win team with the current roster.
Jimenez isn't enough to get them to .500, but adding him and
avoiding the July yard sale should put us at least in the 72-75
win range.

Equally high of a chance with Jimenez that he goes back to
sucking and your stuck with Edwin Jackson 2 and losing your
second highest draft pool. Maybe he learned how to pitch with
a lower fastball velocity or maybe he really is a 5 era pitcher
that he was for the last 1 1/2. Hammels could give you as much
upside if Bosio can get him to throw more ground balls without
losing the pick. Sanchez is a fly ball pitcher who had a bounce
back year in a big park, no interest there either

Another thing about the second round pick is that it is really
more of a supplemental 1st rounder. There is a ton of high
school pitching talent as well in this draft. In 2010 Syngaard,
Aaron Sanchez, Walker all went around when the Cubs will pick.
I doubt the Cubs could flip Jimenez, the good version, for any
of them next trade deadline.

How about when the signing might make a meaningful difference,
or be enough to put a rebuilding team into serious contention,
such as when the Braves, who had been in a similar rebuilding
mode, signed Pendleton. Signing an expensive FA when the
signing is unlikely to make the team a serious contender is
seldom going to be a move which anyone will like long after the
signing. See the Jackson signing as a recent example.

I think the concern over injunctions is misplaced. The general
rule on injunctive relief is that courts are not to grant
injunctions unless the plaintff shows a very high likelihood of
winning on the merits of the case when it is heard AND if the
plaintiff will suffer irreparable harm if an injunction is not
grants AND the plaintiff can not be adequately compensated thru
money damages. I don't see how the rooftop folks could possibly
suffer irreparable damages which could not be compensated thru
money damages.

How can anyone look at the roster as it sits today and think
it's anywhere near a 70 win team? This collection of stiffs
would struggle to reach 60 wins, tops.

Pendleton was coming of wRC+ of 84, 101, 60 the three seasons
before. I doubt the Braves were expecting him to take a 65-97
team to 94-68 the next year. The AAV of his contract has $2.65
million the top contract at the time he signed was $3.25 million
(Mark Davis). It was also a point where MLB salaries began to
increase a lot. He signed December 1990, by March 1992 Sandberg
had the highest AAV of $7.1 million.
Another rebuilding team, the Washington Nationals signed a 32
year old Jayson Werth to a 7 year, $126 million contract after
going 69-93 and that led to a 80-81 record the next year. It
hasn't held them back from spending any money, and might have
helped other players take them seriously even though it was a
huge overpay.
Tanaka is 25 and if his prime years aren't going to be when the
Cubs are good, it is going to be a very long decade.

I'm looking for reasonable rebounds by Shark, Jackson, Castro,
Rizzo and Barney. I'm more optimistic than most about Olt.
The bullpen will be much better, and will improve when Fujikawa
and/or Vizcaino are ready. I'm optimistic that we'll see Baez,
Bryant, Alcantara and Hendricks in 2014, and I hope to see them
well before September.
