I look at it kinda like this.
Lets say I lived next door to a strip club and the strip club
had a big window right in front of the stage.
Lets just say I built a big deck on my house and charged people
5 dollars a piece to come sit on my deck and watch the action.
Do you think the strip club would give a damn if they remodeled
the building and I couldnt see anymore?
       Nope.

Laws are laws. If the Cubs thought they didn't have to obey the
laws, they wouldn't have twiddled away the last year waiting for
       neighborhood approvals.

I think the Cubs are ok on city approval issues. I think the
conflict is with rooftop owners and the stupid revenue sharing
agreement. Empowering them in the first place, when they were
mooching off the Cub product, was asinine.

Maybe if Ricketts hadn't called them crooks and thieves at the
convention, the deal wouldn't have blown up. Yeah, they are, but
       that was pretty dumb.

From my limited understanding of the laws the roof top owners
are unlikely to win a lawsuit as they would have to sue the city
as well about the whole change in zoning laws. They would be
unlikely to win, but could get injunctions stopping the Cubs
from starting anything as it works it way through the appeals
process. It would delay the renovation for years.

The Cubs payroll over the next 5 years is going to be tiny. A
couple $20 million contracts might get the Cubs payroll close to
$100 million again. By the time some of our prospects start to
get expensive the Cubs will have enough additional revenue to
support a payroll closer to the Yankees or Dodgers. The fear
that some people have of players getting some money is just miss
placed. The point is to actually get some major league talent
on the field at some point to win games, not try and win the
World Series with a $30 million payroll. If your point is that
the Cubs should wait till the "right" time to spend, when will
that be and who will be a free agent. Most teams are locking up
their young players to club friendly extensions, limiting to
actual pool of free agents that are worth spending money on.

Absolutely true. However, you only told half the story. The
other half is that you entered into a contract with the strip
club owners that said that you could continue to let people
watch the show from your deck as long as you paid the club 17 %
of your proceeds. And then you went out in reliance of this
contract, and expanded your deck at considerable expense, to
increase the income of both you and the strip club.
Why do I get the feeling that Corey is speaking from personal
       experience?

Dave I promise my wife wouldnt let me within 10 miles of a strip
       club.

Does anyone have a link to the part of the convention where
Ricketts called the rooftop owners crooks and thieves.
By the way, my understanding is that the rooftop owners are not
suing the Cubs, but rather a financial advisor who DID call the
       rooftop owners various names.
But it is the threat of lawsuits, with the associated delaying
injunctions. Even if they lose, it could cost the Cubs tens of
       millions of dollars.
