Build a new stadium. Find somewhere they can do what they want.
If they are serious about winning then the fans will follow. I
for one don't care all that much about Wrigley field. Screw the
roof top owners.

Kenney was part of the Tribune team that did the deal. I
believe they were getting a lot of bad press about putting up
those stupid green fence.

Build a new stadium, do one or two series a year at Wrigley for
nostalgia...it would be packed...and the rest at the new
stadium. I think the point that the Cub games are not the
property of the rooftop owners is a good one. Love the
rooftops, but the owners took the risk when they improved those
buildings and built their bleachers, etc., when they did it.
What good is it all if the Cubs move? Same as if they put up
view blocking scoreboards.

Ultimately the Cubs have the final leverage over the rooftop
owners. Not only would the Cubs moving deprive the owners of
any of their revenue, it would plummet the value of their
buildings. In part because of that fact, I don't expect the
Cubs to move. It would be suicidal for the rooftop owners to
place the team in a position in which they believed that became
necessary.
At this point the city has (slowly but finally) made the
concessions it needed to make in order to warrant the Ricketts
family making their investment in the ballpark. The only
obstacle now is the rooftop owners (and apparently primarily two
owners). We'll see just how far the other rooftop owners are
willing to take their case.
The Sun-Times story indicated that the Cubs plan to go ahead
with construction of the Right Field sign. That would seem to
represent something of a silver lining in this mess.

I have to admit, just looking at the new renderings of Wrigley
after the renovations, it's going to be so commercialized that I
think a lot of the charm is going to be taken away.
If you're just going to have a big corporate revenue generator
instead of the Wrigley we all grew up with, you may as well just
go do it right and build a ballpark for that purpose.

Gee, after so enthusiastically praising JR a little while ago,
he goes and makes me disagree with him. I actually live less
than 1.5 miles from Wrigley Field and have attended many, many
games there. The changes will certainly make the ballpark look
different, but I don't think they'll undermine the essential
qualities of the park at all. In fact, having a Jumbotron where
you can see replays and such will enhance the experience of even
the most traditional fan. My guess is that the changes will be
taken for granted within two or three years of their
installation.

Building a new ballpark is kind of expensive. That might put
the Rickets plan back another dozen years before they are
generating revenue and paying off their investment expenses.

In terms of understatement, that may rival the suggestion that
the homerun is a somewhat efficient way of scoring runs.

And truthfully who in the hell wants to tear down Wrigley
anyway?
Screw the rooftop owners and feed em fishheads.
Do what's best for the Cubs and be damned with what the rooftop
owners want.

Some of you know much better than I do. But I know where I
live, when it's a residential neighborhood, a business or in my
situation a church can't do much of anything if neighbors
oppose. Different story in a business district. The logic that
the Cubs should and can just do what they want seems to make
sense. But if it was legal, they'd have done that a long time
ago.
