Everybody wanted (and still wants) the Olt before getting
beaned. The one without the vision problems. From what I've
read, there is significant optimism that the vision problems are
corrected, so I'm pretty hopeful that he'll wind up being a
useful player.

another question... Did Tanaka even visit Chicago? if you're
going to sign for six to eight years to play in a city wouldn't
you at least want to visit it?

I thought it was the first city he visited. Indications are
that he spent a lot of time with Hoyer, Epstein, and Renteria.

I was under the impression that he didn't go anywhere but Los
Angeles, and all the teams (including the Yankees) went to him
for their presentations.

Of course, by normal human standards, Tanaka is already very
rich and could well have visited Chicago on vacation in the
past.

I don't think they would want Tanaka to visit Chicago in
December/January, anyway.

He was originally scheduled to meet with teams in Chicago
(because it is centrally located). Due to poor weather, the
meetings were moved to LA. He hasn't been to Chicago recently,
and probably not at all.

Before I could respond, cubsin and davep posted most of what I

The goal is to field the combination of players which will give
the team the best chance of winning, NOT to give your star
players the best chance of having a HOF career or of making the
All-Star team, and the best players also see this, as Pete Rose
demonstrated with the Reds when he offered to play 3B in order
to open an OF position for George Foster. Rose was not as good
a thirdbaseman as he was a LFer, and his total value to the team
at 3B was not as great as the value he offered while playing the
OF, but the net value to the team of him at 3B and Foster in LF
was far greater than the net value of Rose at 3B and whoever
else the Reds had to put at 3B.
